When Neutral Milk Hotel mastermind Jeff Mangum made a surprise appearance at Occupy Wall Street, it resonated far more soundly than spurious rumors of Thom Yorke's shadow. Though Mangum has been more active in 2011, he's largely been absent from the public eye since 1998. Upon finishing his first song, he announced to the crowd, "I'm here to serve you. What do you want to hear?" according to You Aint No Picasso.
Mangum graced the audience at Zucconi Park with a poignant rendition of the Minutemen's 'Themselves,' as well as some choice cuts from the Neutral Milk Hotel catalog. The concertgoers were particularly responsive to the line, "We know who our enemies are," from 'Oh Comely.'
"You guys have done a beautiful f---ing thing," Mangum said as he finished his set, and in a show of solidarity, the crowd echoed his sentiment, literally. Check out the setlist and the video (via Global Revolution) below:
'Holland, 1945,' 'Ghost,' 'Song Against Sex,' 'Two Headed Boy, Pt. 2,' 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea,' 'King of Carrot Flowers,' and 'Oh Comely.'
