While speaking with Spinner about his latest Nightwatchman album, 'World Wide Rebel Songs,' Morello was kind enough to share his all-time favorite songs about the working class. Check out his top five picks below.
1. 'Power in the Union,' Billy Bragg
That song is Billy borrowed the title of a Joe Hill song and put a fantastic lyric of working-class solidarity.
2. 'Working Man,' Rush
Metal bands don't always get their due when it comes to working-class protest songs, but this one always struck a chord for me.
3. 'Maggie's Farm,' Bob Dylan
It is the great "tell the boss to shove off" song of all time.
4. 'Career Opportunities,' the Clash
Sometimes the greatest working-class anthems are written by the unemployed.
5. 'Which Side Are You On?' Florence Reece
It's a song that was born in the union battles of the Appalachian coal fields but the question it poses is one we should ask ourselves daily.
