After a whirlwind year of playing over 30 music festivals, the Northern Irish indie rockers finally landed in our New York headquarters. We spoke to the band about their hilarious escapades in Asia, being star-struck at Glastonbury and how the concept of "tipping" befuddles them. Check out our exclusive interview and photos below.
What is your pre-show ritual?
Kevin Baird (Bassist): We should probably make one up for the purpose of interviews.
Alex Trimble (Singer, Guitarist): As long as there's a high-five before we go on stage, that's kind of the only thing we do before every single show.
Baird: I've started kissing our tour manager. He has a bald head. I kiss him on the head now before every show, unless it's a warm one and he's really sweaty, but I'm not that bothered. Nothing happened when I didn't kiss him.
What do you find funny about American culture?
Sam Halliday (Lead Guitar): The thing I love about America is seeing all the really typical people that you have all these stereotypes about. Like the first year, touring in a van, we stopped at all these ridiculous truck stops and saw all these truckers that looked exactly as we imagined. Carboys and things.
Baird: The excitement was unexplainable the first time we saw a yellow school bus. It's just something that we've only seen in movies and never really experienced in real life.
Trimble: Just because of Hollywood, America to us, is full of these clichés from movies. It was really exciting driving around New York for the first time and seeing all these places that we recognized from the big screen.
Have you gotten used to tipping?
Baird: Tipping. I'm not into tipping.
Trimble: I don't even know what that is?
Halliday: Cows?
Baird: Tipping for everything.
Trimble: Oh right, as in money.
Halliday: Ah, gratuity.
Baird: Gratuity, yeah. Not into that. [Laughs]
Trimble: I feel like in our country you have to earn it. It's not a given.
Halliday: I'm like Mr. Pink in 'Reservoir Dogs.'
The video for 'What You Know' is quite the sexy throw-back, complete with lovely ladies and, of course, a bathtub. How did you come up with the idea?
Trimble: Well, the song was written about touring ... the lifestyle that we lead and the people that we left behind, through the fragility of our business that we're in. It's so fickle and you don't know where you're going to be in a few years time, but yet you're giving up so much to be in this position. That's what the song's about. In terms of the video, because the song is pretty heavy, a lighthearted video seemed more appropriate. We had seen these directors, Canada, that directed a few videos for El Guincho and Scissor Sisters and we loved their style and what they were doing. So we got in touch and they came up with this concept. They always have this vintage style that they shot with so we told them that we wanted girls and dancers in the video. That's pretty much all we said to them. Very, very pleased with the outcome.
