Adele's Throat Surgery Leads to Cancer Rumors, Reps Deny It

Following last week's news that Adele will undergo surgery "to alleviate the current issues with her throat," as an official statement read, fans have taken to the Internet in droves to speculate about the nature of the singer's illness.

On Sunday night, #prayforadele and "Adele has throat cancer" became trending topics on Twitter, with rumors swirling about the 'Rolling in the Deep' hitmaker's condition.

Back in October, when she scrapped a run of U.S. shows, the British songstress wrote a lengthy blog post detailing her recent health woes. She blamed a vocal cord hemorrhage -- a painful condition that followed a lengthy bout with laryngitis -- for the cancellations.

According to Entertainmentwise, a rep for Adele said, "We would like to reiterate that Adele is to undergo surgery for a hemorrhaged vocal chord. All reports regarding any other condition are 100% false."

Of course, Adele's smoking habit has only added to the rumors, but Dr. Reena Gupta, the Director of the Voice and Swallowing Center at the Osborne Head and Neck Institute, has refuted that in a blog post. "Although she smokes, she is 23 years old," Gupta wrote. "Even if she smokes two packs per day, and has been for a decade, it is nearly impossible to develop smoking-related cancer at such a young age. Other cancers do occur in this age group, but not those that arise from smoking."

Sounds like just another example of the public's overactive imagination and gullibility.
