Jovan 'J-1' Coleman Dead: Drummer for Dam-Funk's Master Blazter Dies at 32
The Los Angeles music community has rallied to support the friends and family of 32-year-old Jovan "J-1" Coleman, producer and drummer for Dam-Funk's deep-funk trio Master Blazter, who died on Sunday, Nov. 27.
While the cause of Coleman's death is currently unknown, Dam-Funk posted a statement on his Facebook page, revealing only that he had "passed in Sweden." The Cleveland native worked as part of Master Blazter after moving to L.A. four years ago.
"At this time we send our most deepest condolences 2 the family & friends of J-1/Jovan Coleman, who passed in Sweden," Dam wrote, in eulogy. "Details on his passing are not available at this time. Just know that our brother will be missed deeply. *R.I.P. 2 our brother J-1 (Jovan Coleman) aka THE DEER & drummer of Master Blazter. *We love U sincerely brother & we will always rep U!!"
Fellow artists offered their condolences on Twitter, while Dam-Funk remembered the Cleveland-born drummer at his weekly Funkmosphere party, with a special DJ set by former J Dilla associate, Houseshoes.
"I'm at a loss. @THEDEER AKA J-1, you made such an impact on all of us. Prayers to @DaMFunK and @ComputerJay. #MasterBlazter," tweeted Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf.
"Respect to @THEDEER. rip brother," wrote Roots drummer Questlove.
Dam-Funk has reported that last night's Funkmosphere tribute raised over $1,000 for Coleman's family.
"Come morning, I'll personally be taking every red cent made from Funkmosphere's bar + $ humbly donated straight 2 Fed-Ex & send 2 his fam," Dam tweeted. "I just counted the $ from @Funkmosphere's J-1 (@THEDEER) tribute 2nite & it came up to over $1000. This WILL help his family. *Thank U #LA."
