Grammy Nominations Announced: Kanye West and Adele Lead the Pack

With all the nominees revealed, Kanye West leads the pack with seven total nominations, though he was surprisingly snubbed for the prestigious Album of the Year category for his excellent 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' LP (It's up for Best Rap Album). His biggest nod is for 'All of the Lights,' which is up for Song of the Year, as well as Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song. His collaboration with Jay-Z, 'Watch the Throne,' was nominated for Best Rap Album, and their track 'Otis' is up for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.
Adele, meanwhile, is up for six, including three of the big four: Song and Record of the Year for 'Rolling in the Deep' and Album for '21,' the highest-selling LP of the year. She previously won Best New Artist in 2009.
To recap the evening's festivities: The first category announced was Record of the Year, which goes to the performer and production team behind the song. Adele got the no-brainer nod for 'Rolling in the Deep' and Bon Iver (pronounced Bon Eye-Vare by presenter Nicki Minaj) were recognized for 'Holocene' from their self-titled second album (we admit we didn't really see that coming, though we love it). British folk act Mumford and Sons were nominated for 'The Cave,' which also surprised us because they were nominated last year for Best New Artist and Best Rock Song for 'Little Lion Man.' (Every year, we forget the Grammy rules. Every. Year.) Bruno Mars and Katy Perry rounded out the nominees with their respective tracks 'Grenade' and 'Firework.'
Song of the Year, which goes to the songwriter or songwriting team, featured four of the same nominees: Adele, Bon Iver, Bruno Mars and Mumford and Sons. The "newcomer" in this category was Kanye for 'All of the Lights.'
Next up was the category that always leads to plenty of contention: Best New Artist (Last year, jazz artist Esperanza Spalding shockingly won the trophy over Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine, Drake and Justin Bieber). This year's nominees include pop-country act the Band Perry, Bon Iver (getting nods for their second album), rapper J. Cole, pop-rapper Nicki Minaj and one of the biggest names in the DJ world, Skrillex. As usual, it seems like a toss-up.
In a moving tribute to the late Jerry Leiber, one half of legendary songwriting duo Leiber and Stoller, Usher, Valerie Simpson and Mike Stoller performed a moving medley of 'You're All I Need' and 'Stand by Me.' The partners also wrote such classics as 'Hound Dog,' 'Yakety Yak' and 'Kansas City.'
The final category announced for this evening's show was Album of the Year, and there were a few surprises there as well. Lady Gaga (who, following the announcement, returned to the stage to perform with Sugarland) is up for 'Born This Way,' Foo Fighters could win for 'Wasting Light' and Rihanna got a nod for 'Loud.' Adele and Bruno Mars rounded out the nominations with '21' (again, shocker!) and 'Doo-Wops & Hooligans,' respectively.
In the Best Rock Performance AND Best Rock Song categories, the identical list of nominees is as follows: Coldplay for 'Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,' the Decemberists for 'Down by the Water,' Foo Fighters for 'Walk,' Mumford and Sons for 'The Cave' and Radiohead for 'Lotus Flower,' which makes us hope we can see some of Thom Yorke's amazing dance moves at this year's ceremony.
Foo Fighters are also up for Best Rock Album for 'Wasting Light,' alongside Jeff Beck ('Rock 'N' Roll Party Honoring Les Paul'), Kings of Leon ('Come Around Sundown'), Red Hot Chili Peppers ('I'm With You') and Wilco ('The Whole Love').
Best Alternative Album will be awarded to one of the following: Bon Iver ('Bon Iver'), Death Cab for Cutie ('Codes and Keys'), Foster the People ('Torches'), My Morning Jacket ('Circuital') and Radiohead ('The King of Limbs').
The 2012 Grammy Awards will air on Sunday, Feb. 12 on CBS at 8PM ET.

Adele I love you girl ... but so sorry to say I am hoping Bruno Mars takes every win he's nominated for...
He's a great singer, songwriter, producer, musician, dancer, performer, etc., just about nothing he can't do well. He is a tremendous talent and I think will have longevity for many years to come...Doo- Wops and Hooligans is a great cd, they do a tremendous job in concert as they are a playing band and they are hugely popular worldwide...so love you Adele but I rooting for Bruno....
i see a video of adele and i can sing ( in my case squeal) along i am a mega fan!!!!!!

December 04 2011 at 2:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPlease, Kayne West is no where near an Adele voice. She is amazing and should win BIG this year. She rocks!!! I wish Rap and Hip Hop would just go away. This is not talent, just a bunch of jumping around and bad vocals.

December 01 2011 at 9:56 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat a bunch of FKING LOSERS attacking Adele because of her weight! Go get on Fat Joe, John Goodman, John Travolta, Jonah Hill, Joseph Gannascoli as well as James Gandolfini, Jason Alexander, Steven Seagal, Artie Lange, Reuben Studdard, Meatloaf, Seth Rogen, Pavorati, Biz Markie, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc
Or how about you dont get on anyone about their weight at all and MIND YOUR OWN FKING BUSINESS!
Ever since Kanye' comment's about who should have recieved a Grammy a few year's ago (In case you forgot, the SOB ran on stage an grabbed the mike from the winner. ) he has not been on everybody's BFF List. In fact, that little adventure could just cost him everything.

Adele's songs are thoroughly worthy of not only nomination, but the actual awards themselves. Then there is the joke that is Kanye West and his "music". Here we go again with the PC BS that pervades the music industry and politics in 2011. We already have a President that did not deserve the office he holds, but we have to again pretend that "artists" like Kanye West and the garbage he produces, are worthy of nomination in any catagory for a Grammy award. What a joke! Nominating that thug simply ensures that he will be present on award night to get up on stage (without being asked or invited) to "interrupt" someone else's speech, so he can spew more of his drivel about who should win, or who is a racist or who we should vote for or who kids should emulate, etc., etc. If he gets up on stage next year (for any reason) I hope someone throws a loaded diaper in his ugly face!
December 01 2011 at 9:33 AM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyI couldn't have said it better, Redletter2008! I always thought the Grammys were awards for music, not noise, drivel and rants. Oh, I forgot, if you don't like "Rap" (the "C" is silent) then you are a racist. Funny, I loved Dianna & the Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Darlene Love, etc. but since I despise cRAP "muzak", I am a racist. It's the politically correct secular progressives who are destroying our great country! They are turning us into a natin of whiners.
January 31 2012 at 7:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBruno Mars is internationally well known, even asia and other contenent, so why not U. S. A., which his songs mostly r popular and people loves it, geez!
December 01 2011 at 9:28 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down Replywho is Bruno Mars???? Is it a person or a group????
December 01 2011 at 9:58 AM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplySeriously are you really saying you don't know who Bruno Mars is? Really? One of the biggest, fastest growing stars in the last two years. If you seriously don't know him go to YouTube put in his name and watch a few of his many videos...he is popular around the world....grew up in Hawaii now out of Los Angeles, just finished a South American tour a couple of days ago...all his concerts are SOLD OUT - Worldwide -
His video performance tribute to Amy Winehouse "Valerie" was talked about for weeks - his USA Xactor It Will Rain - talked about for weeks, his UK XFactor performance Runaway Baby - legendary performance - treat yourself to a few hours of his music...then don't every ask who is Bruno Mars again... cause you will hopefully be a Hooligan fan.
