Monterey Pop Festival's Rare Images Collected in New Book -- Exclusive Gallery

For veteran music journalist and author Harvey Kubernik ('Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and the Music of Laurel Canyon' among other titles), 1967's Monterey International Pop Festival is an event that rises above all of the other milestone music festivals. A Los Angeles teenager when the monumental festival took place, it had a profound impact on him, even though he didn't attend.

He and his brother Kenneth have just released a spectacular, and most importantly, definitive book on the subject: 'A Perfect Haze: The Illustrated History of the Monterey International Pop Festival' from Santa Monica Press.

Bursting with hundreds of rare photographs, as well as intimate, first-person accounts from many of the artists and contributions from Lou Adler and Michelle Phillips, the Kuberniks have lovingly crafted a substantial title that is one part scrapbook and one part historic document. Joplin, Garcia, Hendrix, Redding and dozens of other legends and compelling characters from the era jump off the pages, which are laced with narratives that put the reader backstage, onstage and everywhere in between.

"We did whatever we could to find the best, rarest photos and stories to bring this event back to life," Harvey Kubernik. "From he moment I walked into the movie theater in 1969 and saw the film about this festival, this gig began. This was something I had to do. As far as what we were able to include on this book, the ephemera and the visuals and the photo research and the karmic destiny of things turning up in the ninth inning -- the famous coach, John Wooden, whom I knew, used to say, 'The harder you work, the luckier you get.' That's how it has been with the journey to create this book -- everything came true. And I think we achieved just what we set out to accomplish. We told the story, the whole story, about the most important music festival ever."

I saw the classic rockumentary Monterey Pop back in 1977, when I was in my early teens, along with Gimme Shelter the same night. This book on the festival looks kind of interesting & if I see it at the library I'll pick it up. I WOULD have seen the Beatles at Shea Stadium in 65 as well as been at Monterey, Woodstock & Altamont but I was way too young at the time.
