What Song Is in the Citi Rock-Climbing Commercial?
- Posted on Jan 12th 2012 4:07PM by Cameron Matthews
Citi's newest commercial for the "Thank You Card" will take you soaring beyond debt to the highest of the Grand Tetons. As a yuppy couple shimmy their way up a treacherous mountain, a souring voice sings "Somebody left the gate open!"
"We talked about getting a diamond, but with all the Thank You Points I've been earning, (cue music) I flew us to the rock I really had in mind," narrates a climber with good credit. The commercial itself may infuriate couch surfers who see no correlation between unhinged gates and rock climbing, while others may be inspired to get off their behinds and spend beyond their means. But the most compelling part of this ad is its musical accompaniment.
L.P., aka Laura Pergolizzi, a relatively unknown singer-songwriter from Los Angeles by way of New York, is responsible for the wonderful vocal acrobatics of the commercial's song, 'Into the Wild.' Since 2001, the singer has been in and out of some big-time label contracts but was mostly used for her writing talent. She has earned songwriting credits on the Backstreet Boys' 2007 hit 'Love Will Keep You Up All Night,' Rihanna's 'Cheers (Drink to That)' and a whole bunch of tracks for the talent-challenged Heidi Montag.
After becoming disenchanted with her major label work, Pergolizzi shortened her name to L.P. and struck out on her own. 'Into the Wild' is her first single from an upcoming Warner Bros release that proves to be quite promising. Check out the full song below, and while you're over at YouTube stop by a parody of the Citi commercial involving a very talented toddler.

Not a bad voice in the lower register but when she hits the high notes it is the kind of glass shattering, dissonant screeching that will raise the hairs on your neck.

Or demanding that someone set the table. Then the singer begins yowling: "Yowwwly, yowwwly, yowwwly." Maybe she's finally realizing that she'd have to climb back down again. How do we, how do we get down again?
Don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but it wrecks an otherwise good commercial and grates on my (admittedly 55-year-old) ears.
Right?? Too funny. Somebody left potatoes?! It's an awful awful song.

Whoever told this woman she had musical talent played a cruel joke on the world, and eff you Citi for subjecting anyone to this. Good god. People who enjoy her yelps should be lined up and...given a kite to fly.
February 02 2013 at 9:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyShe's not singing "totally mashed potatoes"? I want to slash her throat every time I hear that song. She would sound no different if I was given the pleasure. Sofa king annoying!
