Lana Del Rey on 'SNL': Cool? Nervous? As Bad as Juliette Lewis Thinks?

Sure enough, Del Rey's 'SNL' performances -- 'Video Games' and 'Blue Jean,' both posted below -- have already sparked a flurry of Twitter commentaries. As Hollywood Reporter points out, actress and musician Juliette Lewis was among the first to slam the rising singer.
"Wow watching this 'singer' on SNL is like watching a 12 yearold [sic] in their bedroom when theyre pretending to sing and perform," Lewis reportedly tweeted, although the post seems to have been deleted.
Taking the stage in a lacy white gown, Del Rey gave understated readings of both songs, changing the melodies in a manner that suggested she was either nervous or taking some creative liberties. On 'Video Games,' she twirled twice and swayed slightly but mostly kept still, letting the eerie blue lights wash over her. On 'Blue Jean,' the lights were purple and pink, but the performance was largely the same.
Speaking with MTV earlier this week, Del Rey said it was "not a fluke" that she'd landed a slot on 'SNL,' even though she's a relative newcomer whose debut album, 'Born to Die,' doesn't drop until later this month.
"You just think to yourself, 'Don't f--- up,'" she said. "And that's it. That's all you ever think with live television."
So, what do we think? Did she f--- up or nail it?

I love her unique style, her voice and both songs. What annoys me most is when I'm watching a performer sing, I have to see their big fat tongues, which most are scummy looking, all their teeth, and the backs of their throats and they SCREAM their guts out, to make sure everyone notices them.
Lana will totally rise above it and leave the others down there where they belong.
In the world of entertainment sometimes all you need to be is different. Like an artist painting its either your taste or its not. If was palying in my car I would push another button. But..... that's just me

Better than a lot of other people could have done live. The way some were saying I thought she was going to trip and fall down or something. Instead, she sang her song quite nicely.

Tom Waits is an artist like literally no other, and hundreds of musicians from every genre have covered his work. Bruce Springsteen even covered "Jersey Girl", which Waits wrote as a parody of Springsteen. This chick is already yesterdays' news. Here's a lesson: If you don't know what the hell you're talking about, just don't talk.

With that said, her performance was bad. Really bad. It's ok to bomb, but own it. Don't pretend that it is all part of the mystique. I think that part of the problem is that she is a label generated cut out. Never mind that she came from money. That is irrelevant. But here we see the full product after the plastic surgeries and hair extensions and name change that adds up to a look a straight out of Valley of the Dolls. Doesn't mean she isn't talented, unfortunately you need a gimmick to become famous. Looking and moving like Sharon Tate hers. For some reason it considered chic or cool to go retro. I don't get it. Anyone can dress up and flip their extensions like Cher.

Although a swallow first warning would have been nice before the Sharon Tate reference. I baptized my new netbook screen in Pepsi. Thanks. And speaking of label generated cut outs, I'm dating myself badly by saying halfway into 'Video Games', all I could think of was the 50s-60s pop idol disaster Fabian. He couldn't sing either but he was a real cute cut out. Just like Lana. Sad thing is, I like 'Video Games' and suspect she might be a better than fair songwriter, but she really should leave the singing to others. Her attempted styling on SNL should only be attempted by someone who actually has the vocal training and breath control to handle those glides and slides without autotune.

Her work is more like "performance art" similar to Laurie Anderson. She is a storyteller...much to sophisticated for SNL.
And Juliette Lewis and Brian Williams as critics....a has-been actress and a talking head news reader..get back to your "day jobs."
Nice try, honey, but she is NOT a performance artist. Laurie Anderson PERFORMS, she has stage presence and quirky charisma. Also she does not imitate a dead person when she performs unless it's deliberate.

SNL was always infamous in the late 70's for introducing unusual/cultural acts that in most cases, I hated. I remember Leon Redbone, and thinking "WTF"? He sucked so bad I was livid. Then there was Tom Waits. The guy looked like he was pulled out of a cardboard home in New York's filthy side, and had no talent.
So, with this in mind, Lana was beautiful, and I heard hints of her vocal range that showed she was neither nervous or lacked confidence, and as I mentioned she looked beautiful. As for Julia Lewis? She is the ugliest hairiest smelly skank on the planet, and needs to re-boot her brain.
Maybe, if SNL was actually funny instead of sickening, I would love to see new artists on the show. In Lana's case- she was a LOT BETTER than most on that show.
Lana dear, you need to just listen to yourself and follow the melody as best you can. Practice is the key. You may want to take voice lessons to hone in on your talent. It's not unusual to be nervous, in front of millions of TV viewers. We all have our ups and downs. That's just life and makes us human.
