The pop stars took pot shots at each other during a televised pre-show red carpet special on NBC with censors deleting John's comments. When asked by Carson Daly about the nominees in the category -- which included his song 'Hello Hello' from the, ahem, classic film 'Gnomeo and Juliet' -- John said, "Madonna hasn't got a f---ing chance."
A surprised Daly replied by saying, "Those are fighting words."
"No, those are accurate words," John said before the interview ended.
Later in the special and available on YouTube, Daly interviewed Madonna and actor Andrea Riseborough and referred to John's comments. "Your buddy Elton John was just here," Daly said. "Was he wearing a dress?" Madonna replied. When Daly told the pop star John said she didn't stand an "effin chance" the singer said, "Oh damn him, those are fighting words, those are fighting words. May the best man win."
During the Golden Globes ceremony, when Madonna was onstage accepting the award for her song 'Masterpiece' which appears in her widely-panned film 'W.E.,' producers cut to a close of up John who did not look pleased with who won.
According to US Magazine, while Madonna was speaking, John's husband David Furnish posted a mini-rant on his Facebook page: "Madonna. Best song???? F--- off!!! Madonna winning Best Original Song truly show how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism. And her criticism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is."
The reference to Lady Gaga concerns interviews Madonna gave last week which described her song 'Born This Way' as "reductive."
Backstage, Madonna said she hoped John "speaks to me for the next couple of years," adding that "he's been known to get mad at me so I don't know."
Meanwhile on a lighter note Trent Reznor -- who along with Atticus Ross won Best Original Score in 2011 for 'The Social Network' -- was nominated again this year for 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.' "HOLY SHI (oh, nevermind!)," he tweeted on hearing that 'The Artist' took home the award.
