Steven Tyler National Anthem Performance: The Aerosmith Legend Butchers 'The Star Spangled Banner'

Tyler sang the anthem in traditional Aerosmith style -- complete with a raspy voice, bluesy swagger and a hard rocker yell. During his acappella performance, Tyler wore a sequined Patriots scarf.
After his version of the 'Star-Spangled Banner' was complete, social media sites lit up and "Steven Tyler" was quickly trending on Twitter. The commentary wasn't pretty and most accused Tyler of an awful performance. Many people drew 'American Idol' comparisons and tweeted that Tyler "wouldn't get a golden ticket to Hollywood" with his performance. Journalists criticized Tyler too including FOXSports columnist Jason Whitlock who Tweeted "Steven Tyler far more obscene than Janet Jackson's t*tty."
When Steven Tyler sang the National Anthem before the May 2001 Indianapolis 500, he changed the words which caused a public outcry. This led Tyler to issue a public apology.

I think he did a GREAT job! If you love Steven Tyler...you LOVE Tylers voice. Did they expect him to change his voice for this performance??? They are the ignorant ones for even thinking he would sound different than he ALWAYS sounds. I say GOOD JOB Mr Tyler. You did us proud. The words were correct and your voice was (as always) right on! =)

he sang his style, & didn't mess up the lyrics. i thought he sang with feeling, but i also realize many would dislike it because it was different from the anthem normally heard at a sports event. perhaps the game organizers should've considered this? why did they invite him? i'm canadian, & sing along to my anthem, but if i was miked, half the crowd would fall over laughing (or booing?). curiously, my favourite rendition of the british anthem is done by freddie mercury & queen.
