Gary Glitter's Super Bowl Payday: Disgraced Rocker Could Rake in Royalties

Gamblers who bet the "over" for this Sunday's Super Bowl won't be the only ones hoping for a high-scoring game. Every time the Patriots or Giants celebrate a touchdown by playing 'Rock and Roll Part II,' it'll mean money in the pockets of the 1972 song's composer, Gary Glitter. According to the NME, the British glam rocker stands to rake in thousands of dollars.

There's just one problem: Glitter is a sex offender who moved to Vietnam after serving jail time for possession of child pornography in 1999. Once in Southeast Asia, he was convicted of additional sex crimes.

In 2006, the NFL said it didn't want teams playing Glitter's enduring jock jam, but given the tune's ability to pump up a crowd, the song continues to be heard in stadiums. The Patriots, for their part, blast the anthemic track after every touchdown during home games.

Luckily, the rock supergroup Tube Tops 2000, featuring Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur, Eric Erlandson from Hole and Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go's, cut a version in 2001. By sticking with this cover, the Pats and Giants can get their "duh-nuh-nuh nuh-nuh, hey!" fix without contributing to the financial wellbeing of a pederast.

But wont Gary Glitter still get a royalty just because he is the composer of the song, even if the Patriots play the newer version by Tube Pops? I would think so, right?

So what's the difference, whether the NFL allows his version or the new remake, if they are only trying to stop from a pedophile from profiting off their superbowl, if he is going to get royalties either way, why not just stick with the original? Wha's the point of only allowing the remake verison, of Gary Glitter is going to get a fat check anyways?
