As if to prove that her voice had returned to its full strength, Adele started the song alone on a dimly lit stage, singing some of the chorus and effectively silencing the entire Staples Center.
From there, she went back to the song's beginning, building it up slowly with her huge backing band hitting the thumping, four-on-the-floor rhythm. At times she seemed a little nervous, probably still not 100% sure that her voice would hold up, but it appeared that her confidence grew as the song progressed.
By the end, Adele was back to her old self, belting out the track's epic finale. Unlike many of the other performers tonight, she rarely moved while standing at the microphone, showing that all she needed was her voice, not theatrics or flair.
When the song was over, the arena erupted, giving her a well-deserved standing ovation. Looking overwhelmed and elated, Adele stood and repeatedly mouthed the words "thank you," as gracious as ever.
Welcome back, Adele.
