Love claims she is the lone arbiter in decisions concerning the commercial use of Cobain's music, and that she never gave permission for the song to be used.
This apparently is not entirely true. Love allegedly sold half of her rights to Cobain's music to Primary Wave Music, a licensing company, as well as the exclusive rights to distribute the complete Nirvana catalog.
Furthermore, Primary Wave approved the use of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' in the Muppets movie and secured permission from Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, the two surviving Nirvana members. Additionally, Dave Grohl appeared in a cameo role during the movie.
There is a silver lining to the cloud haunting Courtney Love. TMZ reports that a portion of the profits from the songs licensed from Nirvana's catalog will go to her and her daughter, Frances Bean.
