CMW 2012: From Connoisseurs of Porn to Cowpuncher, Why 10 CMF Bands Picked Such Weird Names
- Posted on Mar 21st 2012 2:00PM by Aaron Brophy
Pkew Pkew Pkew (Gunshots)
Arcade Fire played CMW before they even put out 'Funeral.' Crystal Castles have done it regularly. Same with Carly Rae Jepsen before she became a Bieber-approved world conqueror.
This year's schedule is filled with intrigue. There's Weakerthans lead singer John K. Samson showing off his solo project, the Dears are performing, three classic '90s Can-rock bands I Mother Earth, Treble Charger and The Inbreds are reuniting, and Joel Plaskett will be doing a show in the CN Tower.
These, however, are not the acts that get our maple syrup running. Much like at SXSW this year, once you get past the big names the risks and rewards get greater the further you go off the beaten path. There are acts with names like Pkew Pkew Pkew (Gunshots), Hey Is for Horses, Brave Little Toaster, Cowpuncher and Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party all playing. How can someone not be curious about names like this?
Spinner certainly is, so we tracked down 10 of the weirdest named acts playing Canadian Music Week 2012 and asked them what their deal was.

March 24 2012 at 8:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThey would be better off , punching cows then trying to sing
March 24 2012 at 8:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWho is the idiot that wrote this?? Do they not know that a cowpuncher is a ranch hand that used to run cattle from one location to another, long before there were trains and trucks. How stupid does a person have to be to get a job writing for this rag.
March 24 2012 at 7:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYes, thank you! I was thinking the same thing. Good grief. How can you be a writer if you don't read? Sigh.
March 24 2012 at 8:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou forgot Sonic Derp!
March 24 2012 at 5:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI guess the author doesn't do any research. Cowpuncher is a cowboy/cattle herder. They probably love animals, especially sliced and fried.
March 24 2012 at 5:44 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyFor fun, I jam two words together and give 'them' a history, totally bogus...but that is the fun....example...out of LL's letter, I pull the two words "More For Steep" and do this ...
MORE FOR STEEP: a Jazz combo from Washington DC
or
FIGUIRE OUT HOW: a Gay reggae band from Fresno
The word "cowpuncher" is another word for herding cows/ cowboy!!!! JEEEEEZZZZZ!!!
March 24 2012 at 5:10 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyA cowpuncher is a person who worked on a cattle drive, some of his duties included keeping the steers together as they moved over long distances, rounding up strays when they broke loose from the herd and branding the cattle so they don't get stolen which is where they pidcked up the nickname cowpunchers.I don't think a cowpuncher ever existed that actually punched a cow.I was born and raised in Brooljyn NY and evev I know that much.Mr.Brophy,your a real tenderfoot..............
March 24 2012 at 4:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere is a saying like this “Only one himself knows if the shoes match his feet or not “。If u really love her /him, money ain’t nothing but a number for these loved-up A-Listers. My BF and I both think so! He is a banker .We met via .....RichMingle,,,C0”M....., a nice place for women and oldermen who have much money, ,Ever feel that you would best enjoy someone who is in your group? If u are really interested in it, maybe u wanna check it out or tell your friends.
