Deadmau5 Beefs With Michael Bublé, Says Modern Raves Lack Adventure

Not a bad way to cap off a stretch where he dominated dance music, went platinum, helmed a record-breaking run of shows in New York and then became the first Canadian headliner to sell-out Toronto's Rogers Centre football stadium, a show so massive he even made a concert DVD of it.
So Spinner talked to the Canadian DJ/producer also known as Joel Zimmerman about awards, raves and, of course, Michael Buble.
That's a first this year. It's kind of been playing with this for the last three at the Junos, but this year it's a little bit different, it's kicked it up a little notch. It's kinda f---ed up because now I'm up against the biggest pop acts. Like Drake is not just like the biggest pop act in Canada, he's one of the biggest pop acts, period. I don't know about Michael Buble but, f--k, I mean he's still doing big things.
He had the second-biggest selling album of last year in the U.S.
Well, there you go. Just shows you how in touch my ear is to the ground on that stuff. I owe that f--king guy. I got a bone to pick with him. Did you see the f--king youtube video?
It was the Junos two years ago or last year, I can't remember which because it was just so traumatizing. He was doing his little song and he does this walk by the audience doing the high five. Dude, I had the whole mouse head on and everything and I had my hand out and, I shit you not, the f--ker high fives everyone in the row, looks at me, does [makes a disgusted face] and it's on like two different camera angles because it actually aired.
He won't be at the Junos, but are you ever going to confront him?
Dude, I'm bound to run into him and I'll be like 'yo wassup' and I'll see what he does. 'Cause if he does it again and sticks with his guns then I'll respect him. If he high-fives me right then and there, then f--k him.
What does it mean to you to be in the major award categories?
I mean any kind of appreciation, be it a tweet that just says 'yo I bought your album I liked it you're awesome' or you get a spray-painted piece of metal with your name on it, it's all very much the same to me in my mind. A lot of people get this misconception that I just don't give a f--k. Well, I do. I just don't play the whole [game.] I just want to make music. If I was successful and I wasn't appreciated, I'd quit but if I was unsuccessful but I was appreciated then I'd just keep doing it
Right now you're both. This past year was massive for electronic dance music and your Rogers Centre show was pretty mind-blowing for those of us from the 90s rave scene.
You know, it just sucks the f--king adventure out of it, but I also have this other thought that kids today, and this is obviously a more controlling world, are having an equally good time going to a show like this. On the one hand, it bums me out that we don't have the adventure aspect of it anymore because I liked that shit. I loved f--king sneaking out of the house and coming to Toronto and waiting around Union Square for a goddamn hippie bus to come pick us up and take us to God knows f--king where, you know what I mean? We're never going to get that back. We're never going to have it. And then I think, well, my parents aren't going to get Woodstock back, either. This is the new thing, so let's just make it good.
It is different, though. The first couple WEMFs in the late 90s, for instance, were really crazy when you think about what we got away with at that time.
Yeah, absolutely we couldn't pull shit like that now. Are you kidding? We'd be in jail.
