Kurt Cobain, 'Melvan': Tour Van Nirvana Singer Drew KISS Faces on Fails to Sell

Apparently, the fervor over Kurt Cobain memorabilia knows at least some bounds. Though Courtney Love expects to raise $100 million by selling off "four never-before-seen paintings and one drawing" along with guitars and other odds and sods, "The Melvan," a van featuring artwork by late Nirvana singer on its exterior, failed to get a minimum bid on eBay. Twice.
The van, which was used by The Melvins, Mudhoney and others, featured a KISS mural drawn by Cobain on its side and was being sold by owner Ben Berg last month. The vehicle, a 1972 Dodge Sportsman Royal, went on the block reserved at $150,000 with the bidding to end on March 13.
According to Torque News, that opening asking price wasn't met, despite the listing's claim that "the KISS mural on the side was hand drawn by Kurt Cobain using sharpie markers shoplifted from the Thriftway grocery store in Montesano, Washington."
Berg then decided a few days later to place the Melvan back on eBay with a starting bid of $50,000. According to Forbes, Berg was facing a "personal financial crisis" and wanted to sell the vehicle to help offset those problems.
"There were a lot of questions in the first listing that addressed why I am selling this piece of rock and roll history and not donating it," Berg wrote in the eBay description. "I have no other motives other than getting out of debt and saving my home." The seller also added that a non-refundable down payment of $10,000 was needed within 72 hours of the auction's conclusion with the balance due before picking up the vehicle. A photo of the vehicle was shown with Cobain's grandfather Leland Cobain in the picture.
However, no bids were made on the vehicle according to the van's eBay description. According to the Montreal Gazette a potential buyer asked the following: "Does this van possess magical powers? For instance, will it make my crappy band not suck, land us a major record contract and allow us to be the first band to play on the surface of the sun?"
There's no word if Berg will attempt to put the vehicle up for sale again on eBay in the near future.
