"Do you think that TV show even thought twice before using our band's name for their show?" he wrote. "I'll bet they were just like 'fuck it, fuck them.'"
OK, let's back up and start from the top. Girls, as a gender, have been around way longer than the band. Therefore a show about girls (the gender) has just as much, if not more, claim to the name than a band called Girls, which is made up of not-girls (aka boys.) We wont even mention Jay-Z's "Girls Girls Girls" for fear of heads exploding.
Owens' point is that his band had already staked out a degree of cultural prominence and believes that the TV show is piggybacking on it and/or knocking them back into cultural irrelevance. But, you know, maybe he shouldn't have chosen a name that applies to slightly over half of the world.
"Its a bit sucky to be informed by a giant company like HBO that you don't matter enough culturally to not have your name taken away or used," he added. Listen, we love Girls (the band) but does that mean that girls the gender doesn't matter enough culturally to have their name taken away? Furthermore, yes, it is "sucky," but you really must come to terms with the fact that you are an indie band and HBO is a giant company. If anything, someone relating your name to the show is probably a good thing, considering how much ink has been spilled over Dunham's creation.
"Girls is obviously a word that cannot be owned by anyone," Owens admitted, then said that "anyone that really respected us wouldn't have used it." First of all, duh. Second of all, well, maybe they just don't care.
Head over to Hipster Runoff for a full catalogue of Owens' tweets. Also, Girls played on Conan last night, so check it out below. Then, take a look a look at Girls' "Lust for Life" video, which has absolutely nothing to do with the Iggy Pop hit song of the same name.
