According to the Irish Independent, Carol Hawkins is accused of taking cash from Clayton's personal bank account from 2005 to 2008. The total sum is estimated at 4.8 million Euros (approximately $6.28 million US). Hawkins was originally charged in January 2011 and appeared in court the following month when the case was sent forth to trial.
The prosecuting attorney applied for a "further mention" to schedule a trial date at a later date.
Clayton appeared in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court but made no comment on the proceedings.
It's not the first time Clayton has appeared in court this year over misappropriated funds. Earlier this year Clayton sued the Bank of Ireland for "alleged negligence and breach of contract," claiming accountants told him the amount of money taken was far less than what was actually removed.
U2 are currently off the road having completed their 360 tour last year. The band is reportedly working on a new studio album but nothing has been confirmed.
