"With a heavy heart the time has come to let all of you know that Handsome Furs are no more.
The most important thing that needs to be said right now is how extremely grateful we are to all the fans all over the world that showered us with love and support over the years. Thank you for everything! It's been an incredible 6 years and we owe it all to you."Handsome Furs initially began as a spin-off of Boeckner's other (also sadly defunct) band Wolf Parade but never reaching a similar crossover success, despite being equally deserving. Since the release of 2009's unimpeachably epic Face Control, which perfected their mix of Bruce Springsteen-esque anthemics, floor-filling analogue synths and foreign land lyrics, the Handsome Furs had settled for being one of indie music's best groups.
Their 2011 album Sound Kapital featured an even dancier sound and lyrics that touched on the financial crises, which fit perfectly into the prevailing zeitgeist and yet it, too, failed to move the duo beyond their dedicated cult fanbase.
Bad news hit in March when the pair cancelled their European tour, posting at the time, "The band have had an urgent health issue come up, and will be unable to make the overseas trip in April. Alexei and Dan do not take having to cancel performances lightly, and if there were any way to make the trip, they would. Thanks very much for your understanding during this difficult time."
There was never any further explanation, and there has been none here, either, aside from his hometown newspaper, the Victoria Times Colonist claiming that Boeckner "has been living in Los Angeles and has formed another band."
The elephant in the room, of course, is the marriage that provided the impetus and the soul of Handsome Furs and there has been no comment on that potentially sad note, either. According to an email to the Times Colonist by Sub Pop rep Cary Starr wrote, "The Handsome Furs are finished. We will not be [nor will Dan] be elaborating any further on the matter."
When Spinner named 'Face Control' the best Canadian album of 2009 -- thanks to its "icy demeanour, desperate yearning and lustily beating heart" -- we also boldly said "don't call it a side-project, Handsome Furs will be here for years."
Alas, we were wrong.
