According to Gigwise, improper grounding in the stage design resulted in Okumu getting jolted about 20 minutes into the band's set. The group was playing at the Agip Recital Hall as part of the celebrations leading up to the 2012 London Olympics River of Music Festival.
"Dave has survived a life threatening electrocution whilst performing in Lagos, and is presently recovering in hospital," the band wrote on its Facebook page earlier today. "The band have cancelled all forthcoming engagements, and would like to thank everyone for their support and kind wishes."
"Thanks4 all kind words," Okumu added on the band's Twitter page earlier today. "This has been one of the worst experiences but, as my mother taught me, it is possible to transcend all things with love X."
According to a string of tweets from the British Council Nigeria on May 18, Okumu was "doing well" but suffered a sprain "from the fall in the aftermath of the accident" and was rushed to hospital. Doctors there "ran a check on him and confirmed that he was fine." Okumu returned to Britain as scheduled.
The group was performing along with King Sunny Ade and is set to release their sophomore album Rispah on June 11.

May 22 2012 at 5:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWow...This is the kind of accident that killed Les Harvey, guitarist for Stone The Crows, back in 1972. He was electrocuted when he made touched an ungrounded microphone with his wet (sweaty) hands during a concert.
Ace Frehley had a similar experience when he was electrocuted in 1976 Lakeland, Florida as he was walking down lighted stairwell at the beginning of the show. Somehow he found the stuff to get up and perform, even though he says he couldn't really feel his fingers, and the tips of his fingers were burned. Talk about a case of the show must go on...
Hope Dave mends quickly so he can get back to playing music.
What a shocking experience! This is revolting. It must have been an electrifying moment for the audience. I'll bet after that, he didn't know watts what.
