The festival, which was set to run June 1-3, was also going to feature Weezer, Sloan and Theory of a Deadman amongst others.
According to the Brantford Expositer, organizer Ralph Spoltore said local police withdrew their services for the event, which caused the cancellation. A last-minute secondary location was planned for Ohsweken Speedway, located on the nearby Six Nations Indian Reservation, but yesterday morning Spoltore said, "I was notified that Six Nations police were contacted by Brantford police and asked not to support the event at Ohsweken Speedway with paid duty officers." Six Nations officers sided with the Brantford police.
Last week the original site for the festival was put into question as Brantford Police Service told Spoltore they had worries regarding event security, according to the Brantford News. Once police did that the Grand River Conservation Authority withdrew the use of the Brant Conservation Area, which was where Hockeyfest was slated to take place. Brantford Police later said organizers "missed critical deadlines" and didn't meet the requirements needed to pull off such a festival.
"The Brantford Police Service supports and appreciates the importance of these events taking place in our city; however, the issues with the organization of Hockeyfest exceeded matters of security and left other involved agencies with a similar sense of frustration," the police said in statement issued Tuesday (May 29).
In a rather strange display, the official site still has no mention of the event's cancellation or any explanation regarding what transpired. A link where fans can purchase tickets fortunately has the postponement news.
"This event has been postponed," Ticketscene's link says, with fans asked to contact promoter for more details.
Some bands announced the festival wasn't happening via Twitter.
"Hockeyfest in Ontario has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances that are out of our control," Weezer tweeted last night. "Refunds available at point of purchase."
"We are extremely disappointed by the news that Hockeyfest has been cancelled," Down With Webster tweeted. "We will connect with all of our fans in southern Ontario soon!"

This has certainly heated up the moments for Hockeyfest, and all parties. This is how wars are started.....lack of communication, and obvious heavy handedness. The fact that Brantford Police and GRCA decided to pullout for their own reasons were justifiable in their own right, as they were seemingly presented to the public interest. Promoter Ralph Spoltore has been put between the Rock (and Roll) and a very hard place. In a last minute ditch effort, he makes good on providing a venue site that will build bridges between Brantford and Ohsweken. This would have brought a professional venue to the area, benefitting so many more than the usual ones with the hands out first. The fact that the Brantford Police, pulled a Loyalty card of Solidarity with SIX NATIONS POLICE is eyeopening at least, and a sharp Gibson to the forehead!
What an opportunity for Ralph and Six Nations......despite the so called "solidarity" claim of Six Nations Police however, I firmly support Talent Venues of this magnitude for the future of SIX NATIONS. I don't believe that SIX NATIONS POLICE have the man power to accomodate the security issues presented. Further, SIX NATIONS POLICE are already on SOVEREIGN Land, and have SOLIDARITY to their own. This move ultimately shows the residence of SIX NATIONS and Brant County at large, that regardless of how our communities struggle to live in harmony with each other, Governing bodies, use manipulations to undermine "that which is out of their understanding". I ask all those who purchased tickets in good faith, to have patience and offer Ralph some time to overcome this devastating news, and let him honour his obligations. In Fact In a sign of reverse solidarity, those willing, might consider letting Ralph have the ticket value towards renegotiating a venue at another facility. I know it's a stretch, but there's no way he can personally be responsible for the outcome of this fiasco created. It's amazing when Brantford wants to host a parade, game, run, or any other Harmony Square event, that they can make it come off without a hitch. They should have kept their mouths shut, and saved face for all......
Big Apologies and understanding to Ralph.....you Rock...... and........ Roll Sir......and we have faith in the recovery from this tragedy. Keep going forward, put this behind you, and perhaps hire some additional legal personal, to CYA........cover your ass!
Peace to you and all the bands, vendors, patrons, campers....and anyone else who is passionate about Hockeyfest 2012.....all the best to you.
