Coachella and its holograms back in the spring were just warning shots. Music festival season has officially begun. From the peace-and-love of Woodstock in 1969, to the big beat parties at Glastonbury in the '90s, to the recent crop of music festivals, the basics have stayed the same: it's still part concert, road trip, sometimes rave and camp experience all in one carnival-esque package.

Today music festivals no longer just cater to one audience or niche, they reflect the iPod shuffle culture we live in. The set-up and festival line-ups reflect an almost postmodern deconstruction of category, and in some ways, dissolve social barriers. Anything goes and everyone attends and there's something for everyone. The act of enjoying music, in such a large group, makes it a communal, tribal and interactive affair.
