Flaming Lips' 8 Show, 8 City, 24 Hour Tour Also Features Grimes, Grace Potter, Others

Earlier this year the Flaming Lips tossed out the rather logistically paralyzing idea of trying to stage eight shows in eight different cities in a span of 24 hours. Now details have emerged as to the where, when and who they are playing with on the trek, starting this Wednesday, June 27 at 3:30 p.m. local time in Memphis and concluding with a 4 p.m. show in New Orleans the following day.

During the whirlwind adventure the band will also be vying for a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records, trying to break a record currently held by Jay-Z, who did seven concerts in 24 hours in November 2006.

Obviously the band will not perform full-length shows, but will instead do "mini-sets" filled "with many surprise collaborations and guests." The first show is set for Handy Park in Memphis with New Fumes opening. On the same date at 6:30 p.m. doors open for a Clarksdale, Mississippi show with Gary Clark Jr. as support. The third show of the date will be held in Oxford, Mississippi with Grace Potter & the Nocturnals opening the show with doors at 8:30 p.m.

The Flaming Lips will surely enjoy two to three minutes of down time before the June 28 phase begins at 1 a.m. in Jackson, Mississippi with Neon Indian opening. From there the group travels to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to play at Benny's Boom Boom Room with Hunter Hayes supporting and doors opening at 6:30 a.m. Biloxi is the next stop at 9:45 a.m. with Neon Trees opening.

If Wayne Coyne and his crew are still standing, the final two stops will be in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with Givers and doors opening at 12:30 p.m. Finally, New Orleans' House of Blues will mark the finish line as the doors open at 4 p.m. with Grimes in support.

Tickets for each show are now on sale with partial proceeds from the shows donated to VH1's Save the Music Foundation. The O Music Awards will stream the entire odyssey with accessibility for mobile and tablets.

The group -- who recently performed a free concert at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square as part of NXNE and were part of a fascinating related Day in the Life feature -- is nominated for two O Music Awards: the Digital Genius Award and Most Extreme Fan Outreach.
