It was helped by the fact the "Beat It" and "Thriller" singer had an unprecedented year of sales success. That year Jackson sold 8.2 million albums throughout his catalog in the U.S. alone, which was more than any other artist. He also had four separate albums amongst the Top 20 in sales for the year, the first time anyone had ever done that.
Unfortunately, Jackson wasn't around to enjoy this success.
