The Monkeys also offered up their debut hit, "I Bet That You Look Good on the Dance Floor," and as a billion people watched around the world, drummer Matt Helders marked the celebration of U.K. culture by rocking a Union Jack tracksuit, the NME reports.
Joining the Monkeys on the global stage was Alex Trimble of Two Door Cinema Club, who sang "Caliban's Dream," written for the London Games by Rick Smith of Underworld. Other performers included Dizzee Rascal, Mike Oldfield, and rising Scottish songstress Emeli Sande, who performed a stirring version of the hymn "Abide With Me."
Produced by film director Danny Boyle, the four-hour spectacle also featured music by the likes of the Who, the Sex Pistols, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, the Clash, Blur and Amy Winehouse.
