Bassnectar's Scariest Gig: 'I Was Actually Blindfolded in Tijuana' (VIDEO)

Lorin Ashton, better known as Bassnectar, is a bit of an anomaly in the EDM scene. A long-haired rocker looking dude who loves "all eras of music from Ella Fitzgerald to Mozart to N.W.A. to death metal," mostly he's drawn to the less conventional.

"I gravitate towards the road less taken and underground sounds," the Californian DJ, producer and remixer told Spinner in a video interview.

He also told us about some of the scariest parties he's performed at.

"I remember one where I was actually blindfolded in Tijuana," he says. "Across the border, they put this thing over my face so I can't see, went through this landfill and ended up in this kind of abandoned villa with like... I played inside of an empty pool. I was pretty scared. It was cool."

Bassnectar, whose latest album Vava Voom came out in April, figures this whole "making music" thing is the best way for him to make an impact in the world.

"As I graduated I met Perry Farrell, who saw a set of mine at Burning Man out in the desert, and I started working on some remixes with him and that was the year 2000, 2001," says Ashton, putting his steady rise in the music world in context. "Then it just went nuts. I feel that I can make a bigger impact on people's lives now than if I was in an office building, y'know, working with 40 people a year or something."
