Gotye Creates 'Somebody That I Used To Know' Supercut Video Using Cover Versions of Own Song

Gotye's song "Somebody That I Used to Know" has made him an international star and has inspired hundreds of people to cover his song on YouTube. Now Gotye has decided to merge those covers together to create an "orchestra" version of the song. And it already looks like it will be a hit.

The video was only posted yesterday (Aug. 12) and as of 10 a.m. Eastern Monday morning was nearing 425,000 hits with over 20,000 "likes."

"Reluctant as I am to add to the mountain of interpretations of Somebody That I Used To Know seemingly taking over their own area of the internet, I couldn't resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of source material offered," the singer wrote in the YouTube description, adding he was inspired by Kutiman's Thru-You project to create the video.

The video entitled "Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra," "is from the YouTube user videos featured, each of them a cover or parody of Somebody That I Used To Know. No extra sounds were added to the mix, but I used some EQ, filtering, pitch-shifting and time-stretching to make the music."

Gotye also said he avoided using "any existing remixes" and "any covers from tv talent shows."

The musician -- born Wouter "Wally" De Backer -- also added that he tried to be as "comprehensive and extensive" as possible with downloading the source videos, but due to the volume of covers provided he knows "there are many clips that I missed." He also include a link to all of the original videos used in this new video on his official site.

The video starts with a man on acoustic guitar saying "let's get started" before different video clips from the various versions are shown throughout, ranging from covers on guitar to xylophone to one man using his own body for the sound effects. Other versions include saxophone, banjo, harp and a choir.

Perhaps the funniest moment comes nearly four minutes in where one man shouts "This is ridiculous! Nobody can play a whole guitar by themselves!" The statement is in reference to the string of YouTube videos that popped up following Canadian group Walk Off the Earth's cover which featured all five members collectively performing the song on one guitar.

Gotye continues touring behind his last album Making Mirrors and will perform later this week in Korea before playing Japan's Summer Sonic festival this weekend. The singer mounts a North American tour starting in Denver, Colorado on Aug. 22.
