Keenhouse Spinner Mix: L.A. Producer Drops Eclectic 'Soundtrack for a Little Escape'
Ken Rangkuty
"A good part [of Four Dreams] was conceived while traveling and spending time in Europe and Bali," Keenhouse, aka Ken Rangkuty, tells Spinner. "I kept a diary of some sort, which I would work from. While I was traveling I was mostly taking it in though, sorting out ideas and impressions. I would start the work afterwards, from what I had collected. Most of the work or the writing process was actually observing, and letting ideas take shape."
Though at one point he was loosely grouped with pre-Drive Tour dreamwave collective Valerie, which counts College, Anoraak and Futurecop! among its ranks, Keenhouse has taken a decidedly more experimental turn.
"Valerie is still one of the collectives that I feel really lucky to have met," he says of his affiliation with the crew. "I run across Anoraak pretty frequently, for some reason. The last time, we ran across each other about four times within a week, but only because I kept missing my flights while I was out to play. I also joined them recently for a stop of the 'Drive' Tour here in L.A. As for the music, there are reasons it might have changed sonically a bit, but I really just followed what I wanted to do. I need to have fun with what I'm doing. Doing the same thing over and over isn't something that fuels my passion."
While we await the release of Four Dreams on Sept. 4, Keenhouse put together a great mix for Spinner, featuring everyone from Hi Voltage, 808 State and 4Hero to Jokers of the Scene and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
"The mix is a bit different from the DJ mixes I would usually do, in that there are variations in tempo and styles," he explains. "It's not a high-energy mix for the dance floor. I've chosen tracks from artists I admire and tracks I'm into at the moment. There are disco tracks, jazz tracks, older electronic remixes, and an orchestral work from one if my favorite arrangers.
"I sometimes like to put smaller mixes together for wandering around, a little escape," he concludes. "It's that kind of mix. A soundtrack for wandering around. There are are tracks which can be played in a club environment, coming from a usual set, and tracks to dive into for listening."
Enjoy.
