According to TMZ, Mayer might be in possession of $465,000 in dirty money from the scheme's collapse.
The scheme revolves around Darren Berg. Berg was sentenced to 18 years in prison for bilking investors of more than $100 million through his investment company. Trustees assigned to try and find that lost money are tracking down where the money went and thus suing everyone they can in order to recover it. This is where Mayer comes in.
Legal documents now show that Mayer's name made that list after booking agency Grabow & Associates was paid by Berg's company.
"John Mayer performed at a corporate event in 2008 and was paid for his services," a lawyer representing Mayer told TMZ. "The opportunity was brought to John through his talent agency, CAA."
A judge has yet to rule on the case.
Mayer has made no comment on the situation. The singer last month announced he would be participating in a "Love For Levon" tribute concert to the late Levon Helm Oct. 3 at the Izod Center on a bill with My Morning Jacket, Gregg Allman, Lucinda Williams and John Hiatt among others. Mayer released his latest studio album Born and Raised earlier this year.
