Posted on YouTube, the performance is far different than the ramped-up punk style the song's known for. Morissette is seated on a stool and accompanied by piano before more instruments enter the gentle ballad-ish version.
And although she looks downward at times, most likely at a teleprompter or a sheet with the lyrics, the chorus "Sometimes I give myself the creeps/Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me/It all keeps setting up/I think I'm cracking up/Am I just paranoid/Or am I stoned," resonates far more given the circumstances.
The song concludes with Morissette saying, "We love you Billie Joe," as the audience gives a loud ovation. Morissette had already performed the song "Guardian" from her new album Havoc and Bright Lights as planned beforehand.
Green Day have cancelled some promotional appearances with Armstrong in treatment. It's unclear when he'll be ready to return. The band, who just released Uno! earlier this week, have made no comment about Morissette's cover of the track. The group have a handful of U.S. dates later this year before a more extensive North American trek kicks off in early January.
Meanwhile, Morissette is currently on her own North American jaunt before mounting a European tour in November that concludes in Liverpool on Nov. 30.
