According to the Dallas News, police were called to an apartment complex in Arlington where they found a man shot multiple times. Although rushed to hospital, Meta later died from his wounds. Police also found another man at the location when they arrived who cooperated with authorities.
On Wednesday, police arrested and charged David Matthew Merrill, 34, with murder and set bail at $50,000. Merrill was later discovered to be Mata's son-in-law and the altercation between the two had concerned a family matter.
Mata joined The Cavaliers in 2006 and had also performed with the Hi Roller Band. The Cavaliers are perhaps best known for their 1964 hit "Last Kiss," which went to No. 2 on the Billboard charts. The song, originally performed by Wayne Cochran in 1961, was covered by Pearl Jam for the 1999 charity album No Boundaries: A Benefit For Kosovar Refugees before reappearing on the group's 2003 rarities compilation Lost Dogs.
"I can't believe someone could get that upset with Rudy," bandmate Neil Scheckels told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I never heard him say a bad word about anyone."
"We were mostly a studio group when Rudy joined us in 2006, but he had such a great voice," Sid Holmes, one of The Cavaliers' founders said. "He was such an easygoing guy who was always giving out hugs."
No date for Merrill's next court appearance has been set.

September 29 2012 at 5:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWas shocked to see this on Facebook this morning. I met Rudy Mata at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, what a voice he had. I chose Rudy and Donna to sing at my Mother's funeral, they made beautiful music together. God rest his soul, and be with his family.

What band?
Clearly I don't remember anything from the 60s.
Anyone who remembers the sixties probably wasn't there.

September 29 2012 at 8:03 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySorry to hear it. "Last Kiss" is such a classic. One of the all time greatest sad/tragic songs. Too bad that many are more familiar with the version by a lame crap band like Pearl Jam.

When police officers or the Sheriff are called to a Domestic Violence scene, a dozen or more officers show up to the scene. It is a very dangerous call for law enforcement.
September 29 2012 at 2:12 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyWhy anger and rage has to blind a person's reasoning and commit such a terrible thing of killing his father-in-law? To make things worse, killing a great singer and musician like Rudy Mata, who was one of the members of one of the classic Rock-and- Roll bands such as the Cavaliers who pioneered Rock and Roll in the 60's? Oh God! Where is the world heading? What a terrible tragedy.
