Arlo Guthrie's Wife of 43 Years Dies After Cancer Battle

WASHINGTON, Mass. (AP) - Folk singer Arlo Guthrie has announced the death of his wife, Jackie, at age 68.

An obituary released by Guthrie's record label says Jackie Guthrie had inoperable cancer and died Sunday at the couple's winter home in Sebastian, Fla. They had recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary.

In a Facebook posting, Guthrie says his relationship with his wife was "a very great love."

The couple also shared a home in Washington, in western Massachusetts. Guthrie's Facebook page says he's cancelling or postponing some upcoming shows and will begin a planned tour in Canada next week.

Jackie Guthrie grew up in Malibu, Calif., and met Arlo Guthrie in 1968 while she was working as a cashier in a Hollywood club, The Troubador.

She is survived by five children and 10 grandchildren.

My sympathies to Arlo and family. I've seen you perform twice - in the Royal Albert Hall in London where you played This Land is Your Land, and explained how the words could apply to England if you went around the world in the opposite direction, and at the Gaithersburg Folk Festival in Maryland where you played Ukele Lady when a small boy requested you to play something by George Formby. I never met your wife, but she was a lovely woman.

Even tro I also lived in Sabastian I never met the wife. Loved what both of did with the house . I lost my wife to cancer 21/2 years ago and is intered in Sebastians cematory.
I feel your lost.We were married 49 years.
