Courtney Love: Nirvana Musical Not Happening, Thankfully

The lawsuit launched by Britney Spears' former manager Sam Lutfi had the pop music world in a tizzy, but when testimony wandered into his co-management of Courtney Love and Nirvana territory, ears pricked up in the rock world too. Lutfi claimed that he and Love were discussing a Broadway adaption of her late husband Kurt Cobain's Nirvana material, but Courtney has firmly denied that this type of sell out will ever happen.

In an interview with The Observer, Love set the record straight about her plans for Cobain's legacy. "There will be no musical," she said, roundly denying Lutfi's earlier claims. "Sometimes it's best just to leave things alone."

Since Kurt's death in 1994, Courtney has been fairly active in her own career, both in music and acting. Obviously, there's her role in the alternative L.A. band Hole, but she also starred in "The People vs. Larry Flynt," and though she didn't land it, wanted a part in "Moulin Rouge" and agreed to have a Nirvana song used in the film.

"I said yes once -- to Baz Luhrmann to use eight seconds of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in Moulin Rouge. But he wasn't allowed to use it in the marketing. I didn't get the part in the film. I was so pissed off I made up the term to 'Baz' somebody," Love complained.

Though Love has given up some of the rights to Kurt Cobain's image and Nirvana publishing, she said she regrets even these small concessions.

"I got so bullied into selling what I sold. I regret it so much. I'm never selling the rest of it," the Hole frontman said. She also added that she has no plans to give the rights to the couple's daughter, Frances Bean. "She doesn't have anything to do with it," Love said.

So no Kurt Cobain anthems will be sung from the stages of Broadway, at least not while Love has anything to say about it.
