Having finally wrapped up and released her debut album Vows, Kimbra Johnson is already in the process of securing some new partnerships and a slew of songs that she's ready to get cracking on now that she's finished almost two years of non-stop touring.
"John Legend's producer [Dave Tozer] got in touch with me and said that he liked my work," Kimbra tells Spinner. "He said we should get together and do some work and, of course, I said sure."
Although these sessions had nothing to do with any upcoming Kimbra releases, the singer did help the R&B artist pen a couple of new songs for his new album.
"It was a really fun experience for me to be in a big American studio," she explains. "He's very focused and has an incredible ear for melody and even though our genres are different, we had a lot of crossovers. It's always fun to work with somebody a bit different."
Johnson doesn't have many other new leads she's willing to reveal just yet, but she does name The Dillinger Escape Plan's Ben Weinman as a future collaborator.
"There are a lot of sketches, but obviously I haven't been in one place for more than three days this year so I haven't had time to execute them yet," she adds. "It's cool to meet all these inspiring people who could be part of the next album."
For now, Johnson is just completing her first headlining tour in the States, which allowed her the opportunity to really "show people the whole range of work and not just kind of cram it into half an hour," she says, referring to her showcase slot she had opening for Gotye.
"People know they're not going to hear that song at my show," she says, of her association to "Somebody That I Used to Know."
She adds, "I genuinely get a feeling that people are there because they've connected with the record, but perhaps also out of curiosity to see what I can do, so I have to prove myself a little. But I enjoy that challenge and getting to show them for more than just six lines of a song."
Vows is the sum total of far more than singing six lines. It defines literal years of preparation as Johnson started writing and recording it when she was 17 years old (she's 22 now). Even though she was frustrated at the speed she was working at to release her album -- people around her advised her to take her time -- she's glad she took that time looking back on it now.
"It was the right idea because you only get one shot at the first album and it's your doorway to everyone, so I'm glad that I put the time into it," she says. "It's funny when people say it was an overnight thing, because it really wasn't."
It was, however, a thing that is going to allow Kimbra the opportunity to work with a lot of people in the future.

Um Gotye (aka Wally De Backer) is from Australia NOT New Zealand. Fact check before printing your story.
