French led the band for decades, after inheriting leadership from his father Albert "Papa" French. The Tuxedo Band specializes in traditional forms of jazz and has existed for over 100 years. Although French was very well known within the local New Orleans scene he didn't see much national attention. The iconic drummer did once grace the cover of Downbeat Magazine
Aside from drumming and performing, Bob also regularly volunteered as a DJ for WWOZ, the community-supported station that broadcasted almost solely Louisiana music. He was known for being very outspoken on the show.
French his survived by his two brothers George and Albert French and four children.
