According to the band's site today, Moore had his 1966 (circa) black Fender Jazzmaster stolen from a Best Western Inn in the city "last night 12-12-12 around 12 midnight." According to the post, the "iconic" guitar has various stickers on its body. "FYI it's a 1960 serial #41927," it adds.
A police report has been filed but Moore is asking retailers to email them if the culprit or culprits attempts to "sell this relic" to music shops. He's also encouraging others to pass along this information to help spread the news of the theft. Various stickers on the instrument have phrases like "i threw up," "bomb drop while you shop" and a yellow stick with "school's open" written in black over it.
In September Prefix reported Moore and fellow band mate Lee Ranaldo recovered two guitars stolen back in 1999, including a white Jazzmaster Moore used during the band's Washing Machine era, which fans discovered up for auction on eBay.
The group's history of having their gear stolen is so well documented that Sonic Youth maintains a link on its site devoted specifically to "Stolen Guitars." The list includes three different Gibson Les Paul guitars and not one, not two, but eight different Fender Jazzmasters, including two "sunburst" colored guitars. Each stolen guitar link contains extensive information on the instrument and its usage in the band's history.
Sonic Youth are currently inactive after releasing their last studio album in 2009 entitled The Eternal and after Moore and singer/fellow band member Kim Gordon separated in October 2011. Moore started a new group this year called Chelsea Light Moving. Meanwhile Ranaldo and Gordon made guest appearances at a recent Dinosaur Jr. concert in New York City on a bill also featuring Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew and The Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr.
