Paul Simon Honors Sandy Hook Teacher Victoria Soto at Her Funeral
Jason DeCrow, AP
Without introduction, Simon -- who knows Soto's family through his sister-in-law -- played "The Sound of Silence" to a hushed audience at the Lordship Community Church in Stratford, Ct. There was no applause after he was done.
Soto died protecting her first-grade students in the Newtown massacre, bravely ushering them into a closet before stepping in front of gunman Adam Lanza. Her 24-year-old sister Jillian gave a moving speech at the service, which took place Wednesday.
"Somebody wrote me a letter about the recent tragedy that I would like to share with you: In it, it said they had to sit down with three small children, explaining to them that monsters sadly do exist out there. But they felt relief that because of my sister, they were able to tell them that superheroes also are very real. You are my superhero."
