While we are inspired by the heroics of people like Victoria Soto, we wonder what great things she may have gone on to do in the future had she not been forced to sacrifice her life to prevent the senseless killing of children. To that end, we feel strongly that it's incumbent upon us to do something that makes a difference.
We're not a political website and we typically shy away from editorials. But we also know the status quo surrounding gun violence in America is unacceptable.
So we're doing four things today.
First, we're observing the national web moment of silence on AOL.com at 9:30 a.m. in honor of the Sandy Hook victims.
Second, we're joining with 750 mayors and other leaders in the Demand a Plan campaign (http://www.demandaplan.org/) to ban high volume assault weapons and require criminal background checks for firearms. This is a sensible idea and is in line with our commitment to family safety.
Third, we know not all of our members agree on potential changes to gun laws. So if you have different ideas on how to prevent tragedies like the one in Newtown, please let us know in the comments area below and we'll share the best of them on AOL.com. This isn't about ideology -- it is about reducing the number of mass murders, so please share any realistic solution you may have.
And fourth, we're sharing how the nation's elected representatives have voted on gun laws to allow you to see where your representative stands, and we urge you to contact them to express your point of view on how to prevent these tragedies.

Allow teachers that are properly trained to conceal carry. Stricter gun laws will do nothing. We already have enough laws on the books enforcement of the laws is all that is needed. Make it mandatory for Phyciatrists to submit the names of the crazy's to the fbi for inclusion on the list for background checks. Again the use of the term assault weapons is incorrect the weapons used are rifles that have the appearance of an assault weapon thats all.

December 21 2012 at 7:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWe already have more than enough gun control legislation on the books already, much of which is not enforced. When will the bleeding heart fools who keep calling for tougher gun control, and assault weapons bans etc. wise up and realize that if a criminal, mentally defective, or unbalanced person is going to commit a crime of violence, it will not make ANY difference to them if it is illegal to be in possession of the weapon they plan to utilize to perpetrate their heinous crimes. It was illegal for Timothy McVeigh to have the bomb he had on the truck in Oklahoma City, but did it stop him? No. And he killed more children with that one act than the Conneticut shooting and the Colorado theater shooting combined. You folks at AOL are just jumping on the anti -gun bandwagon in an attempt to make people think you are sympathetic and caring, when in fact your call for further gun bans is misinformed and illogical, and only directs the debate away from the REAL issue which is how do we stop people from thinking that killing peaople enmasse is an exceptable means of social expression.
December 21 2012 at 7:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere should be no "gun free" zones unless there are armed guards all around, notice our nations hospitals have security, also Shopping Malls, various business establishments, e.g. convenience stores, liquor stores, pharmacy's, etc.... Not allowing our teachers to be armed is a magnet for these wackos and looney tunes who would do harm. Individuals, such as, retired police, military, firefighters, secret service or any citizen who have training and a desire to serve could assist on a paid or volunteer basis. What happened to good old volunteers? The Revolutionary War volunteers defeated the worlds largest army. Our Sheriff and Police departments don't have the manpower, we need volunteers and retired personnel.
December 21 2012 at 7:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyif you put an armed officer at every school, this crap would stop right now.
