Singer Janis Ian confirmed the passing of the Brooklyn-raised songwriter this morning on her Facebook page. "Shadow Morton, who produced 'Society's Child,' 'Leader of the Pack' and other seminal records, is gone," she wrote while posting a photo of herself with Morton at "The Tonight Show" in 1967.
Morton is often confused with fellow girl-group promoter Phil Spector. Though the two were contemporaries, Shadow's understated style varies from Spector's signature wall of sound.
Besides his work with the Shangri-Las, Morton also produced Iron Butterfly's mega hit "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," Janis Ian's solo career, Vanilla Fudge's "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and over 300 other recordings.
Shadow Morton died yesterday (Feb. 14) in Laguna, Calif. No cause of death has been announced.
