Son Volt, 'Bakersfield' -- Song Premiere

Rejoice, lovers of cow punk! Son Volt has returned to put a bit of country-fried rock 'n' roll in your life. The band's upcoming album Honky Tonk is coming to record stores on March 6, and you can hear their new single "Bakersfield" right here.

"I wanted to acknowledge and pay homage to the country music that came out of Bakersfield -- Wynn Stewart, Buck Owens and Merle Haggard," singer Jay Farrar tells Spinner. "They all reinvigorated country music in their own respective ways. Wynn Stewart and Buck Owens both brought a rock and roll intensity and sensibility while Merle Haggard wrote and brought incisive lyrics to country music."

That aesthetic certainly is heard on the band's new track -- filled with fat pedal steel guitar, chunky lead lines and images of the American Midwest. The St. Louis-based frontman sources the latest Son Volt material from that classic AM sound, and continued reports from a city full of decay and earnest people.
