She sat down with the producers of "Makers: Women Who Make America," a PBS and AOL documentary airing tonight. In it, Brownstein discusses the founding of Sleater-Kinney in 1995, the media's focus on gender in music and her approach to comedy.
"I didn't feel like we were early in the movement because things had already been happening. There was Bikini Kill and Bratmobile, and even the term Riot Grrrl, which was a term that was placed upon a lot of bands happening specifically in Olympia, Wa., seemed like it had come and gone," she says in the documentary. "We always had the modifier placed in front of us -- female -- even though that was not a description of what our music sounded like. We did not sound like Joan Jett, we definitely didn't sound like Blondie, so it felt arduous to get to the place where people stopped using that as a way to describe your music."
Check out the clip below for more from Brownstein, and watch "Makers" tonight (Feb. 26) on PBS at 8PM ET.
