A statement on his official site broke the tragic news: "With great sadness we have to announce that Alvin unexpectedly passed away early this morning after unforseen complications following a routine surgical procedure. We have lost a wonderful, much loved father and companion. The world has lost a truly great and gifted music."
Born in Nottingham, England, Lee was best known for his incredible performance of "I'm Going Home" at the inaugural Woodstock festival. Displaying extremely gifted guitar skills and incorporating a medley of classic rock 'n' roll hits, the set led to Ten Years After playing in arenas around the world.
The band also had a hit with "I'd Love To Change the World" but broke up in 1973. Lee went on to have a successful solo career, collaborating with George Harrison, Steve Windwood, Mick Fleetwood and Ronnie Wood on his album On the Road to Freedom. He would also record and tour with Jerry Lee Lewis, Mick Taylor and Scotty Moore. His last album was 2012's Still on the Road to Freedom.

What routine surgery? Can they even manage to say that? I bet it was back surgery, which medical imbeciles do because they have no idea about how chiropractic works.

Probably saw Ten Years After at least a dozen times in New York and every show was great. Rest In Peace Alvin Lee. Heaven just got another master for their band.

Most of this action was caught at NY's Fillmore East with the tickets going for $3, $4 and $5, and usualy 2 shows a night.

Others include Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull and The Moody Blues but there are many others. I really enjoy the occassions when a young person excitedly converses about his "discovery" of a musician or band from 40 or 50 years ago. Reminds me of how excited I was when I "discovered" the older Blues men and women. RIP Alvin.
