A statement released Monday by the manager of the rhythm and blues group said Bobbie Smith passed away Saturday morning due to complications from pneumonia and influenza. He was 76.
The statement says Smith had been diagnosed with lung cancer in November.
Smith was the group's original lead singer and was the voice on their first hit "That's What Girls Are Made For." Also called the "Detroit Spinners," the group earned nearly a dozen gold records and half a dozen Grammy award nominations.
The group's biggest hits in the 1970s included: "I'll Be Around," ''Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" and "Games People Play."

We have lost so many great singers, and it dosent appear to be any to carry that mantel.We have lost our soul and r&b catorgory, the younger generation hasent been able to maintain the guidelines set for them. It will be interesting to see the hip hop generation sit down some years from now and listen to the garbage they have produced. ITS A SHAME

I loved the spinners. In the past three weeks we have lost some of the finest musicians the world has known. I cannot listen to the radio much as there is nothing that has any guts.
Thank GOD for Amazon.com music. I buy at least 5 CD's a month so I can play what I want to hear.
It is inexpensive and the only way to go. Peace to you Hatti { I have always loved that name }
