According to an interview with the Electronic Intifada and reported by Rolling Stone, Waters said he believes it's "the most effective way to go because the situation is that the Israeli government runs an apartheid regime in Israel, the occupied territories and everywhere else it decides."
Waters also said he's considering creating a single urging artists to not play Israel in the same vein as the 1980s single "Sun City" which highlighted South Africa's apartheid policies. He plans on speaking with E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt regarding it. And he's about to publish an open letter to "all my colleagues in the music industry, asking them to join me in the BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement."
But it's the boycott which he is currently focused on.
"They are running riot and it seems unlikely that running over there and playing the violin will have any lasting effect," Waters said, adding he's personally asked artists to boycott Israel, but won't say who he's spoken to. The musician, who is also a juror on the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, however did cite Stevie Wonder's decision last December to not play at a gala dinner for the Israeli Defense Forces as an encouraging sign.
"I wrote a letter to him saying that this would be like playing a police ball in Johannesburg the day after the Sharpeville massacre in 1960," Waters said. "It wouldn't be a great thing to do, particularly as he was meant to be a UN ambassador for peace. It wasn't just me. Desmond Tutu also wrote the letter. To his eternal credit, Steve Wonder called them (the gala's organizers) up and said 'I didn't quite get it' (and canceled the performance)."
As previously reported in Spinner, Waters stated similar feelings in 2011, telling Al Jazeera he wrote an op-ed piece encouraging musicians to boycott Israel.
"I'm against Israel for exactly the same reasons that I was against South Africa: it's a two-tiered racist system," he told Al Jazerra's Riz Khan in an interview at that time. "They have pass books, they have to carry identity cards that say whether they're a Jew or an Arab. It's insane."

Mr. Waters might want to consider that, since Israel was attacked in 1967 from the West Bank and subsequently came to control it, the average life expectancy for the Palestinians living there went from 48 years to 72 (compared with an average of 68 years for all the countries of the Middle East and North Africa), and Israeli medical programs reduced the Palestinian infant-mortality rate from 60 per 1,000 live births in 1967 to 15 per 1,000 in 2000 (in Iraq the rate was 64, in Egypt 40, in Jordan 23, in Syria 22)
In addition, since 1967, Israeli inoculation programs in the territories have eradicated childhood diseases like polio, whooping cough, tetanus, and measles.
On the other hand, Palestinian Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, has declared that “when an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital is established, we won’t allow the presence of one Israeli in it.”
Roger Waters has the South Africa analogy backwards. In Palestine and throughout the Arab world, the Jews were an oppressed minority for well over a thousand years. A large part of Israel's population is made up of Jews who came there to flee persecution by Arabs. Israel is the one place in the Middle East where the Jews can exercise their right to self-determination. The Arabs do not recognize this right and never have. In the 1930s, the slogan of Palestinian Arabs who carried out pogroms against Palestinian Jews was "The Jews are our dogs."
For the Arabs, the Jews are uppity niggers. The Palestinian Authority today still refuses to recognize the existence of a Jewish state and openly proclaims its intention to chase every last Jew from any territory that comes under its control. In Israel, Arabs enjoy full citizenship rights, including serving in the Parliament and the Supreme Court. Roger Waters cannot be so ignorant that he does not know this. His assertion that Israel is an apartheid state is a shameless lie. Nowhere in the Arab or Muslim world today do Jews enjoy the rights that Arabs enjoy in Israel.
Please tell Roger Waters that you will not buy his music or attend his concerts until he stops supporting Arab apartheid. You may leave a message for him in care of his talent agent:

Thank you!
Thank you Roger!!
America is slowly waking up to how vile Israel is.
$3 billion a year to make us a target for
zealot muslims.
Israel has long been a huge waste of money
and a stupid and dangerous so called "allay"..
they stab us in the back time and time again.
Israel SUCKS.
He has written great songs, though not any recently, but as far as the social landscape of the region, he is totally ignorant. All people, no matter their what their religion or opinions are, have full legitimacy to live their lives in peace in Israel. Mr. Waters, I challenge you to name any other place in the "destroy Israel" world where the same could be said. Can a Jew go go to to any Muslim country and have any rights, let alone full freedom? Anyone living in Israel, has freedom, with not a sign of apartheid. What you try to do is side with those who are are determined to make trouble, and deserve to be punished.
You and anyone who takes your side are the one's deserving a boycott.
Mr.Waters should also look into how countries women and not just women's rights - just how women are treated in Palestine, Gaza, most of the Middle East (except for Israel) and most of the Arab world. Does he just choose the injustices he focuses on at random or is something else going on here?

If you look more closely you will find Palestinians or non Israelis have access to all these things, they even have their own political parties in the Israeli government. The apartheid is being applied by yourself and the Palestinians, that is the truth here. I wish you all the best with your apartheid decision and hope you reverse your decision in due time.
