A lot of bands are faced with the prospect of following up a critically acclaimed album. Few turn their backs on the sound that brought them success in the first place; even fewer manage to do it well.

Vancouver's Brasstronaut are one of those bands.

"If we had an idea, we'd test it out and if it didn't work we'd throw it away," Brasstronaut singer and pianist Edo Van Breeman told Spinner while discussing the band's sophomore album, Mean Sun, before their recent appearance at NXNE.

Toronto's Burning Boyz were more than a little terrified when they first played Yonge-Dundas Square as part of NXNE five years ago.

"We were shaking when we got on stage," singer and guitarist Flynn Tanner told Spinner about the now-12- and 13-year old band members' first festival show.

If this past Saturday's performance was any indication, the four band members -- Tanner, Reed Hollett, Jack White and Dexter Hornsby -- are practically old pros now.

Spinner spoke to the band on camera backstage after their set.
