"Hair is awesome. Hair is a big part of our band," declares Robert Earl Thomas, the guitarist of Brooklyn Widowspeak. I spoke to him and singer Molly Hamilton by phone about the importance of coiffed curls in the grander scheme of rock 'n' roll. Both he and Hamilton sport long, dark brown locks: You know, the almost messy, free-swinging strands that have become such a signifier in alternative musical culture.

Rock 'n' roll is in many ways predicated upon the subversion of popular culture and the pursuit of more divergent paths, and for a while, long and messy hair was a symbol of the freedom and subversiveness that rock music encompassed.

"I'm at my most calm and natural, most 'myself' state when my hair is down," Hamilton says. "I get nervous at shows so I think being comfortable is really important for me."

Adele gave birth to a baby boy in October of last year but has yet to reveal the name of her first-born. Along with her fiancé Simon Konecki, the "Skyfall" singer has been very private about her newborn -- unless a necklace that the star was seen wearing gives a clue to her son's name.

The 21 creator made a recent appearance at the Golden Globes, where she picked up the award for "Skyfall" as Best Original Song. Presumably still in town from the ceremony, Adele was spotted shopping for baby clothes in Los Angeles and Contact Music reports the singer was wearing a necklace inscribed with the name "Angelo."

As Spinner previously reported back in October, singer-songwriter Will Stratton (born Will Lulofs) revealed that he was battling cancer. The Brooklyn-based musician released his fourth full-length album Post-Empire last year, and discovered a few months later that he was facing the disease.

This winter, Stratton moved back in with his parents in Seattle while undergoing treatment. The singer finished his fourth and final cycle of chemotherapy in late December, fighting malignant tumors caused by his testicular cancer.

Dirty Projectors Carnegie Hall Show: Glances of History, Gleams of Brilliance

The lights darken, a door off to the left cracks open, out steps David Longstreth solo. He calmly walks to the front of the stage of Carnegie Hall and begins a rendition of "Swing Lo Magellan" alone with his guitar. As the nucleus for the living organism of a band called the Dirty Projectors, Longstreth starting the show alone onstage with the title track of their latest record was the perfect, understated move. Playing with melody and phrasing like a cat pawing yarn, his yearning voice seemed to both take in and project the gravity of the moment -- the honor and just deserts of his brainchild-band playing the historic hall.

The Dirty Projectors as a musical project are a bit like the Wizard of Oz - emerald green, ephemeral, and floating above - Longstreth is the man behind the curtain working the dials but the rest of the band are this beautiful hologram of sound and fury. Take Amber Coffman's bellowing pipes on what is perhaps the band's most powerful cut, "Stillness is the Move" for example. Appearing toward the end of their set at Carnegie, this track metaphorically brought the audience to their knees as the ever mild-mannered Coffman shrieked into the mic with perfect pitch, dragging her vocals ever higher and pacing the stage like a newly-challenged lioness.

In order to thrive these days, many artists are forced to play and/or give away music for free. On the flip side of that comes actor and musician Adrian Grenier. The "Entourage" star and three partners set up Wreckroom Records, a studio in his Brooklyn home where they lets bands come in to record songs and film videos, gratis. We recently spoke to Grenier about Wreckroom, the origins of the project and how it resembles Radiohead's In Rainbows. Check out the Q&A and exclusive photos below.

What was the inspiration behind starting Wreckroom Studios?

Wreckroom naturally evolved from a rehearsal space in my home. When I moved to [Brooklyn's] Clinton Hill a few years back, I built a studio as a place to jam with friends. The equipment improved over time, and we began filming the sessions to share online. Fans started listening, and we grew organically from there.

How would you define Wreckroom? Is it a label?

Sort of, but not in the traditional sense. Rather than dedicating ourselves to a small handful of bands, we're becoming a launching platform for emerging artists to record a single, film a video and expand their audience. By focusing on building our own brand channels, we're able to provide more to both fans and artists.

Soul singing legend Bobby Womack has been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. The 68-year-old singer and songwriter opened up to Gilles Peterson of BBC 6 Music about his diagnosis and frustrations with forgetfulness.

"The doctor said you have signs of Alzheimer's. He said it's not bad yet but it's going to get worse. How can I not remember songs that I wrote? That's frustrating," he shared.

In the past, Womack has struggled with various health concerns including hospitalization for pneumonia and collapsed lungs plus surgery for prostate and colon cancer, from which he fully recovered.
The group's last album, Under the Blacklight was released back in 2007, and the quartet announced they were officially breaking up last year.

The new material they were alluding to is probably a B sides compilation, something that both lead singer Jenny Lewis and lead guitarist Blake Sennett have previously discussed.

Vanguard of eccentricity, bastion of style and angel-faced beatmaker, Willy Moon wastes no time establishing his presence in a room with quiet insistence. Reposing on a couch in Spinner's New York offices, Moon looks as elegant as the celestial body he chose for his stage name.

Despite the electrifying nature of his recent single "Yeah Yeah," which has reached insta-fame through the ever ubiquitous nature of the Apple iPod commercial, the singer is quite soft-spoken and reserved in person. Striking in a perfectly tailored vintage suit, the New Zealand native's fashion choices are just one facet of his extremely individual nature.

"My parents were very sort of unorthodox people and I suppose they passed a lot of that onto me as a person," he says. "I was looking after myself from quite a young age and I had to fend for myself a lot. When I was 18 I came to London, to pursue my dreams and see what the world had in store for me and see what I was made of -- and I wound up making records."
