Halfway through Spinner's conversation with Alex Ebert, frontman of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the topic turns from the band's back-to-back 2012 albums -- their sophomore album Here was released in May and its as-yet-untitled follow-up drops late this year -- to music's healing powers.

"It's more about certain tones," Ebert says, explaining something he picked up from the book The Yoga of Sound. "They destroy gallstones and kidney stones with certain frequencies and you can also heal things with certain frequencies. We're mostly attuned to the stuff we can destroy with sounds. The healing stuff was more what this book was about."

Royal Headache look like they haven't showered in days. An hour before the Aussie punk-pop band's set in Chicago, frontman Shogun is sleeping off last night's debauchery, somewhere. Bassist Joe is going over the merch money, and keeps losing count. In Minneapolis the night before, the band -- made up of members known only on a first-name basis: Shogun, Joe, drummer Shortty and guitarist Law -- only got two hours of sleep, partying it up with the pals whose couches they crashed on.

If they had the chance to cure their current "royal headaches," Law says two pizzas and some Mountain Dew would do the trick. "Relax and watch a movie, like a comedy with Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler," he says, sounding like he's daydreaming. "A lot of pepperoni, and lots of cheese and two gallons of Mountain Dew. Don't leave bed. You're in for about four hours here."

Yeasayer are taking listeners on another voyage into the sonic unknown with the release of their third LP, Fragrant World.

"I wouldn't say this album is particularly rooted on earth," vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Chris Keating tells Spinner, "because we are constantly trying to find things that sound weird and new to us."

While their 2007 debut All Hour Cymbals served as a ticket to daydream about the other parts of this world, thanks to its apocalyptic harmonies ("Wait for the Summer" and "Red Cave") and tribal polyrhythms ("Worms" and "Waves"), 2010's Odd Blood rocketed the listener off Earth with its pop-influenced electronic bells and whistles. ("O.N.E.," Odd Blood's most upbeat and danceable track, could easily start a conga line at the Mos Eisley Cantina.)

Dixon, Illinois -- the location for Mumford and Sons third of four U.S. Gentlemen of the Road stopovers -- is in the middle of nowhere. Located off a barren exit along Interstate 88, the tony town is in the heart of Illinois farmland, a two-hour drive through endless cornfields west of Chicago and a hour away from Illinois' Quad Cities. Until this past weekend, Dixon's only claim to fame was being the childhood home of America's 40th president, Ronald Reagan.

"It was just 'a band' wants to come to your town," explains Dixon Main Street Executive Director Josh Albrecht of how the show came to fruition. "I didn't know it was Mumford and Sons."

It is nearing 3AM early Sunday morning. Mr. Albrecht and his wife are enjoying pizza and the mind-blowing magic show at Mumford's after-afterparty at Dixon's Crystal Cork. Truth be told, the magic for the town really started in January when Albrecht answered a post on the National Trust for Historic Preservation seeking a main street community for "a band's" concert. Up against 400 other towns on the forum, Albrecht wrote up a proposal for why Dixon, a town of 18,000 nestled along the Rock River, was the perfect candidate for the stopover.

Earlier this year, Deep Sea Diver -- the songwriting alias of the Shins' touring guitarist Jessica Dobson turned full-fledged band -- released their debut LP, History Speaks. While Dobson may have cultivated her guitar jamming with other bands (Beck and Yeah Yeah Yeahs included), it's her work with drummer -- and now-husband -- Peter Mansen and bassist John Raines that's most noteworthy. The album is a dynamic nine tracks of dirty bass and robust percussion bouncing off Dobson's pop and rock guitar work, and boundless voice.

"Most of History Speaks," Dobson tells Spinner, "is the retelling of some of the darkest moments in my life while refusing to cower behind the event." On the track "NWO" -- short for New World Order and about "two kids in love, who are at peace with the dystopian world around them" -- Dobson is actually pulling from her momentary obsession with conspiracy-theory documentaries.

"My imagination had carved out a place in the apocalyptic since I was a child," she admits, "so the idea of total chaos and and the complete inability to control your surroundings was fascinating to me."

Watch out, Electric Daisy Carnival: Chicago has its own electronic dance music festival and, so far, there haven't been any casualties. Over the weekend, the inaugural Spring Awakening music festival took place at the Windy City's famed Soldier Field, home of Da Bears. The turf was covered up so that avid ravers could dress up in fluorescents and twirl like they were on the Burning Man playa to the dirty bass drops of headliners Skrillex, Afrojack, Moby, Flux Pavillion and Diplo. While many traversed for the big-name headliners, Spring Awakening's good times belonged to its smaller stages and the DJs that don't always get the headline, but deserve the hype. Check out some of the not-necessarily new acts that you should check out below.

Oliver Twizt
Dutch DJ Oliver Twizt caught our attention with his "jump" medley, mixing various covers of House of Pain's "Jump Around" that had everyone's feet off the ground. Twizt began as a hip-hop head and producer before putting together his own playlists, and joining the Mad Decent cause. Earlier this month he released a collabo with Diplo, "Go."

Three songs into Tom Morello's five-song set at the National Nurses United rally on Friday afternoon (May 18), just as the Nightwatchman sang the final lyrics of the Bruce Springsteen cover "The Ghost of Tom Joad," the sound died. An awkward silence befell the estimated 5,000 protesters converged beneath the 50-foot Picasso sculpture at Chicago's Daley Plaza.

Given the circumstances, the immediate thought was the omnipresent Chicago police department had pulled the plug on the outspoken rocker. But this wasn't Morello's first time at the rodeo, so to speak. The long-time social justice crusader quickly took matters into his own hands.

"Mike check!" Morello screamed, initiating the call-and-response tactic revived by the recent Occupy Wall Street movements. "Mike check," the crowd roared back louder. "The power went out!" Morello shouted. Immediately, the statement was put on human reverb. "Either by design or by accident," Morello yelled. "But that will not stop the show." In fact, nothing could stop this show.

They started showing up as early as Friday: Deadmau5 heads, or Mau5heads, the iconic beach-ball-sized helmet worn by the Toronto house DJ/producer also known as Joel Zimmerman. Why anyone would want to lug the massive, heavy headgear around a music festival, especially on Sunday when it poured at Lollapalooza twice, seemed baffling.

Some of them glow in the dark, some of them are fuzzy, some are green and some sparkle like disco balls. The fanciest, of course, is Zimmerman's own, which acts like an L.E.D. video wall at times, illuminating a face beneath his mouse ears that mouths the lyrics of his samples. But the Mau5head wasn't the most visually pleasing aspect of Deadmau5's set -- his Q*Bert-video-game-inspired stage setup (put together by the team behind Daft Punk's pyramid stage) was, separating, strobing and splitting to Deadmau5's music.

"We're the Arctic Monkeys from High Green, Sheffield, Australia," frontman Alex Turner announced from the Lollapalooza main stage Sunday evening. No, the Arctic Monkeys are not from Australia, and on Sunday the four-piece brought their native, bleak British weather to Lollapalooza 2011.
A torrential downpour blew over the festival grounds just before sunset flooding fields and leaving 90,000 festivalgoers needing a new pair of shoes come Monday morning. But, the Monkeys waited out the storm for 30 minutes and still got to play a 13-song set that included their quick punchy classics 'Teddy Picker,' 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' and 'Brianstorm' as a rainbow beamed above.

Lollapalooza is big. It's a mile-long walk between the festival's two main stages with 90,000 music lovers filling in the big gap. And on Saturday night, America's biggest-selling artist of the last decade drew what could go down as Lollapalooza's biggest crowd to date to the fest's biggest stage, and still made it feel like it wasn't big enough.

"Holy s---, there is a lotta people here," an astonished Eminem exclaimed after pausing a handful of songs deep into his Lollapalooza debut. The Detroit rapper's set list was big too. After kicking things off with 'Won't Back Down' of his five-time platinum album 'Recovery,' Em charged through two dozen tracks, with the help of hypeman Mr. Porter, that spanned his 13-Grammy-winning discography.

When Coldplay closed out their headlining 19-song Lollapalooza set with fireworks, things turned a little too real for those up front. As rapid-fire explosions went off above the stage to the beat of their new track 'Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,' a waterfall of tiny black gunpowder granules showered the audience. But, if you are one of the world's biggest bands and it took you "20 years to get to Lollapalooza," as frontman Chris Martin told the audience mid-set, why not go out with a bang?

Apart from a quick-yet-poignant Amy Winehouse dedication that saw Martin croon the chorus of the late soul-singer's hit 'Rehab' from his piano, Coldplay's setlist didn't steer too far away from their performance this past June at Glastonbury. The band played three other new tracks -- 'MX/Hurts Like Heaven,' 'Major Minus' and 'Us Against the World,' which Martin joked was inspired by the idea of a "potential love affair between Bill O'Reilly and Sarah Palin" -- that are anticipated for their upcoming, as-yet-untitled fifth album.

Grace Potter wears two pairs of underwear.

"You got to have your s--- straight underneath," the gorgeous singer, known just as much for her soulful, wall-of-sound vocals as she is for rocking out in her trademark gravity-defying, sparkly mini-dresses, tells Spinner before her Friday set at Lollapalooza 2011. "There are so many people now trying to get nasty panty shots, or like the one where I get down on my knees onstage and everyone is like, "Oh my god! I saw her p----. But of course," she assures, "you never see my p----."

In fact, Potter says she doesn't even worry about flashing her fans at this point. "There was a casualty -- at the Dave Matthews show we did in Atlantic City where you could see my underwear, but that's the worst, and it's just like a bathing suit."

Last month, many drove hundreds of miles and waited hours just to see Buffalo Springfield, fresh off a 40-plus-year hiatus, play Bonnaroo. The wait was worth it as Buffalo Springfield -- surviving founding members Richie Furay, Stephen Stills, Neil Young plus bassist Rick Rosas and drummer Joe Vitale -- played classic tracks 'For What It's Worth' and 'Mr. Soul' like they hadn't skipped a band practice since 1968, the same year their last studio album, 'Last Time Around,' was released. But fans waiting to see Buffalo Springfield on the 30-date fall tour hinted by Furay and Stills earlier this year in a Rolling Stone interview, are going to have to wait a little longer.

On Thursday (June 30), Furay posted a message on his Facebook page informing the tour would not kick off until the beginning of next year. "I'm not going to spend a lot time here with details as you speculate among yourselves," Furay wrote. "There's nothing to speculate about, the tour has simply been moved."

Standing in one corner are Canadian alt-rockers the Sheepdogs, and in the other, sassy L.A.-based singer-songwriter Leila Broussard. Both are squaring off in the first-ever Rolling Stone Cover Contest, where one act will be left gracing the front of the rock magazine's Aug. 18 issue. Voting for the last round of the competition ends at midnight on July 1, and in the home stretch, both contestants try to prove their worthiness in three final performances.

For their last turn, the Sheepdogs channel their idols, covering the classic Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young tune 'Ohio,' before taking their powerful vocal harmonies to original tunes 'How Late How Long' and 'I Don't Get By,' the latter performance demanding some serious attention. Broussard also puts her own spin on a rock 'n' roll classic, Bruce Springsteen's 'Dancing in the Dark,' before showing off her own craft with songs 'Satellite' and 'Turn Me On.'

Up high in the San Juan mountain range, some 8,750 feet above sea level, lies beautiful Telluride, Colo., home of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival for 38 years and counting. Every third week of June, it's where mandolins seem more prevalent than electric guitars, banjos are strummed at lightning speed and where a tiny fiddle howls louder than the gusting mountain wind, thanks to veteran musicians and festival regulars like banjoist Bela Fleck, mandolin player Sam Bush and Dobro player Jerry Douglas.

In 2005, at their first Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the Decemberists challenged the deep mountain event's world-class banjo, mandolin and fiddle players to a pick-off. And they won...but only by default.

"We were like 'Bela, come up here and show us your stuff!'" frontman Colin Meloy (pictured) told the crowd, about singling out banjo sleuth and Telluride Bluegrass festival staple Bela Fleck, "He didn't show up, so we decided, by forfeit, we won."

But Mr. Fleck, who also returned in 2011 and played the night before the Decemberists with his acidic bluegrass outfit the Flecktones, would not blow off the self-proclaimed "Telluride Bluegrass Pick-Off Champs of 2005" again.

Rolling Stone Cover Contest finalists Lelia Broussard and the Sheepdogs (both pictured) faced off with their guitars Saturday at Bonnaroo's aptly named This Tent. At stake? The title to be the first unsigned act to grace the cover of Rolling Stone.

To put things in perspective, My Morning Jacket, who headlined Bonnaroo's main stage Friday night and currently have the No. 5 album in the country with 'Circuital,' have never graced the renowned rock magazine's cover, so the stakes are high. But, both Broussard and the Sheepdogs have already survived the brunt of the competition, being narrowed down into a pool of 16 finalists from 1,200 musical acts by the editors of Rolling Stone, RollingStone.com, AOL Music and AtlanticRecords.com.

Both acts played for about 30 minutes, with Broussard opting to go first after winning a coin toss. Often compared to Jewel, she sounded a little bit grungier and more alt-rock-leaning live, during songs like 'Turn Me On,' but took a turn for pop with her closer 'Satellite,' a song about being in love with someone in a video game. "Thank you," she told the crowd at the end of her set. "Holy s---! This is amazing!"

When the lineup for Bonnaroo 2011 was released back in February, some fans thought it skewed a little too far left of the festival's jammy roots. Eminem -- whose name usually dominates mainstream and rap album charts -- didn't seem like a natural fit for the festival's big tenth anniversary but on Saturday night, June 11, the Detroit native proved otherwise.

On the brink of releasing a new album -- a nine-track joint EP with fellow rapper Royce da 5' 9" -- under the name Bad Meets Evil, Eminem's Bonnaroo performance was convenient to start. He tore onto the stage in a t-shirt plugging the release and invited Royce Nickel and Nine out for a few cuts off the album -- 'Lighters' and lead single 'Fast Lane.' "I knew it was a real big festival," Royce told AOL backstage, about rolling up to the middle of nowhere. "All I'm hearing is 50,00 people, 80,000 people, 100,000 people -- I don't know what the hell I'm about to go see."

This happens at Bonnaroo every year: Someone is billed early in the day for one of the festival's intimate tent stages, but the audience overflows its confines to impassable proportions, proving the act deserves more attention. Florence + the Machine was that act this year. The Brit soul-pop group, helmed by frontwoman Florence Welch, took over Bonnaroo's relatively intimate This Tent at sunset on Friday (June 10) for their first appearance at America's grungiest music festival...and good luck trying to get to the front row.

"It's so hot," Welch told the crowd, as security passed out water to the crammed -- and lucky -- front row. Welch herself was cloaked in very unlike festival gab considering the sweltering 95 degree Bonnaroo weather: a black, long-sleeve, see-through silk dress and high heels, which she would kick off later in her set, only to declare "I'm so much shorter now."
