On Monday night, Jack White played the first of two sold-out gigs at New York City's Roseland Ballroom. Performing with Los Buzzardos, his all-male backing band, White treated the crowd to an 18-song set that included songs from his new solo album, Blunderbuss, as well as his hits with the White Stripes, Dead Weather, Raconteurs and Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi.

Rather than write up yet another narrative review of the show, here are the observations I jotted down. Full disclosure: These notes are most likely "enhanced" by the fact that the venue, at least where I stood, was pretty much a cloud of pot smoke. And it's saying something that I was taken aback by that, given that I was at Roseland recently for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros concert/contact-high party.

-- White might have the most punctual audience in rock 'n' roll. Despite the fact that he was slated to go on at 9:10PM (he actually went on around 10:10), hundreds of fans were lined up, in the rain, around the block before doors opened at 7. Donna Summer has died following a battle with cancer. The 63-year-old disco legend reportedly passed away this morning (May 17) in Florida, and her family released a statement, saying they are "at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continue legacy."

"Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time," they said.

Summer is known for her many hits, including "Hot Stuff," "Last Dance," "She Works Hard for the Money" and "Bad Girls," among many others, and won five Grammys over the course of her career. According to an update on TMZ, Summer had lung cancer, which she believed came from inhaling particles after the 9/11 attacks in New York. When the Hives tell you they're the greatest band in the world, they're not being arrogant pricks: That's just how high they set the bar for themselves, their shows and their upcoming album, Lex Hives, which comes five years after their last LP.

We're not sure how President Obama feels about the Beach Boys, but now we know how one of their members feels about him. As TMZ reports, the band's singer Bruce Johnston went on a short rant about Obama, calling him an "a----le" and accusing him of being a socialist.

The comments were caught on camera while Johnston was signing autographs for fans in New York on Thursday, May 10. "Obama's an a----le," Johnston said while being embraced by an admirer. Last month, Black Francis and his wife, Violet Clark, released Let the People Speak, their second album as Grand Duchy. Featuring a more electronic vibe and an old-school radio DJ introducing the songs, it's a much more developed record than their 2009 debut, Petit Fours. Spinner recently caught up with Clark and Francis (aka Frank Black, aka Charles Thompson) to talk about the album, tension in the studio, who's the boss in their collaboration and, of course, what's up with the Pixies (Hint: Not much, and that's why he's "bored").

You went in a different direction on this album. How did that happen?

Clark: The songwriting process was totally different. If people remember the last record, we were tag-teaming like four-hour increments in the studio, layering out ideas on top of each other in real time. Our children were much younger and I think one of them was a newborn. It's all a blur. Crazy times. This time, however, Charles was involved with his Pixies Doolittle tour quite extensively. I had a lot of freedom to set the framework, and decide the direction for this record. I put a lot of stuff down while he was out on tour, and got to develop ideas more fully before he came back. Against Me! singer, guitarist and songwriter Tom Gabel revealed that she is transgender and will soon undergo the transition process to becoming a woman. Rolling Stone broke the news, teasing an interview in an upcoming issue, noting that the punk rocker had only told a small group of family and friends before telling the magazine.

Gabel revealed that she is experiencing gender dysphoria, a condition where a person identifies with the gender opposite of their biologic sex, and said she will soon begin taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis to transition. She will then take the name Laura Jane Grace and remain married to her wife, Heather, with whom she has a 2-year-old daughter, Evelyn.

"For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," Gabel told Rolling Stone. We knew the studio behind "Mad Men" was obsessive about making sure every little period detail was correct, but we didn't realize just how much money they'd pony up for authenticity. So, it came as a bit of a shock to learn that Lionsgate reportedly paid $250,000 to use a Beatles song in the most recent episode, "Lady Lazarus."

At the end of the hour-long drama, main character Don Draper is seen kicking back with some whiskey and listening to the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows," a track off the 1966 album Revolver. Bruce Springsteen has been paying tribute to his late bandmates Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici at every stop on his "Wrecking Ball tour," and last night in New Jersey, he honored another fallen legend, Levon Helm.
