Twenty years after leading the charge in the Grunge revolution, Sub Pop records is still going strong -- though based on Thursday night's Sub Pop CMJ showcase at Manhattan's Mercury Lounge, the venerable Seattle label has mellowed nicely with age. Massive waves of sludge and feedback were nowhere to be found, replaced by the rough-edged girl-group sounds of Xray Eyeballs and Dum Dum Girls and the ethereal dream pop of Memoryhouse and Still Corners (who also treated the packed house to a mind-altering projected light show).

Even "alternative nation" veteran J Mascis abandoned his usual wall of amplifiers in favor of a stripped-down acoustic set of solo material and Dinosaur Jr. classics, but the lack of roaring Marshall stacks only served to highlight his sheer virtuosity. Based on the intimidating amount of young talent on display here, there's little doubt that Sub Pop will be in top form in another 20 years.

The right opening song can make or break a movie and forever change the way you think about a piece of pop music. Because there are so many classic examples, we compiled our list of favorites with a few ground rules. First, no musicals -- sorry, 'Sound of Music.' Second, songs only -- hence the absence of the 'Jaws' and 'Star Wars' themes. Finally, directors can only appear once, lest Scorsese and Tarantino completely dominate the countdown. With these guidelines in mind, take a look and tell us which of your favorites we missed.

On Saturday, March 19, Austin played host to the fifth Mess with Texas party -- a massive, free, and totally unofficial two-stage blowout held during South by Southwest. Held at the East Side Drive-In, the all-day show's stacked line-up featured a who's-who of SXSW's biggest acts, from fresh faces like Esben and the Witch, Surfer Blood and Odd Future to buzz-heavy veterans like OFF!, !!! and Ted Leo (who also took the stage with crowd favorites Screaming Females). Despite the layer of red Texas dust that coated every surface in sight, the huge crowds danced, moshed, and drank themselves into a state of sunburned bliss.

A "riff" is defined as a short, repeating musical theme that forms a song's framework. Thus, guitar riffs are the basic building blocks of rock 'n' roll -- and we've gathered the greatest of the great. Emotional impact, cultural significance and good old-fashioned recognizability are just as important as being flashy or hard to play. No list of "bests" is going to satisfy everyone, and there's only one song per band, but we hope this will at least get you to go back and listen to some of your favorites. So tell us which riffs rock your world in the comments section, and the best will be featured in a follow-up list.

The rock star film cameo is a time-honored tradition dating back to, well, the birth of rock 'n' roll, but sometimes those guest spots get so much hype they're not really "cameos" at all. (Remember Alanis Morissette as God in Kevin Smith's 'Dogma,' or Keith Richards as Johnny Depp's dad in the last 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie?) Here are 20 movie cameos by musicians that didn't get quite as much press.

No Joy, Soldiers of Fortune, Robert Lester Folsom, Tamaryn
Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Knitting Factory
The young ladies of No Joy kicked off the Mexican Summer Records CMJ showcase with a massive wall of fuzzed-out reverb that brought stragglers running in from the bar, and that was just the beginning of the night's guitar heroics. After Soldiers of Fortune stormed the stage for a 20-minute, two-song set that left the crowd, which included Pavement bassist Mark Ibold, speechless, Robert Lester Folsom mellowed everyone's vibes with selections from his recently reissued 1976 "marina rock" album 'Music and Dreams.' The emotional roller coaster peaked when Tamaryn killed the lights, turned on the trippy video projections and enveloped everyone in a thick, warm blanket of shoegaze-y dream pop.

Screaming Females, DOM, Yo La Tengo
Tuesday, Oct. 19 at Brooklyn Bowl
After a scorching set by Screaming Females and some shambolic rock from Massachusetts' DOM, Yo La Tengo treated the CMJ crowd at Mog's showcase to classics new and old, along with some fun covers, including a rendition of Devo's 'Beautiful World.' At one point, smack in the middle of fan favorite 'Sugarcube,' frontman Ira Kaplan abruptly ran off stage to hop onto one of the venue's bowling lanes. A moment later he reappeared, said simply, "Gutter ball," and immediately tore into the song's guitar solo.

The third and final day of All Tomorrow's Parties NY, curated by filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, gave new meaning to the term grand finale. Fog machines (and other smoke-producing items) were working overtime during heavy psych-rock sets by Wooden Shjips, Dungen, and the Black Angels, while Vivian Girls and Girls kept their jangling guitars on the brighter side.

Hope Sandoval (formerly of Mazzy Star) briefly mellowed the vibe with her ethereal chanteuse act, but when Raekwon took the stage, tempos -- and hands -- shot back into the air. Hands were still up during the headliners' set, but they were all flashing the devil-horn salute as doom metal all-stars Sunn 0))) and Boris teamed up to perform 'Altar' (pictured). Their awe-inspiring exercise in bone-rattling sonic extremity sent worn-down festival-goers home with their minds thoroughly blown.

The menace and tight black t-shirts of Day One were replaced by good vibes and frayed cardigans as Day Two of All Tomorrow's Parties rolled on.

Krautrock legend Michael Rother teamed with Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley and Tall Firs' Aaron Mullen for Hallogallo 2010, playing classic songs from Rother's Neu! and Harmonia projects. Sonic Youth ended the evening with a solid, feedback-heavy set that leaned heavily on tracks off 'Daydream Nation.'

All Tomorrow's Parties New York returned to Kutsher's Resort in the Catskill Mountains this weekend, beginning with "Don't Look Back," a full day of bands tackling their classic albums from start to finish. Australian swamp-garage godfathers the Scientists made their first-ever U.S. appearance to showcase their seminal 'Blood Red River' album and Mudhoney raised the old flannel flag, tearing through grunge masterpiece 'Superfuzz Bigmuff (and Early Singles).'

Then it was Iggy's turn. Using benchmark 1973 album 'Raw Power' as a jumping-off point, Iggy & the Stooges blew the roof off the Starlight Ballroom with a hit-heavy set of surging, sweaty intensity, before surrendering the stage to reunited doom metal trio Sleep (pictured above), whose return to 'Sleep's Holy Mountain' tested the limits of human hearing.

If day one was any indication, ATP festival-goers are sure leave on Monday morning a little battered, little bruised, and totally blissed out.

In defiance of the sweltering heat in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, Spanish dance-rockers Delorean got bodies moving at the final Jelly NYC Pool Party of the summer. But the vibe changed entirely when show organizers began trotting out a veritable who's who of surprise hip-hop acts including rap duo Cool Kids, New Orleans icon Big Feedia, not to mention Darryl "DMC" Matthews of Run-DMC fame.

Joined onstage by party rocker Andrew WK, the 'King of Rock' blazed through 'It's Tricky,' followed by a crowd-destroying rendition of 'Walk This Way' featuring Les Savy Fav's spirited frontman Tim Harrington.

Just when it seemed like things couldn't get any better, the Human Beat Box himself, Doug E Fresh, serenaded his mom onstage (with Biz Markie's 'He's Just a Friend') before pumping up the crowd for headliner Gucci Mane, who tore through a quick four tracks before dropping the mic ... and everyone's heart rate.

Filed under: I Freakin' Love This Song

'Something,' The Beatles
1969 single from 'Abbey Road'

I jumped at the chance to write about George Harrison's 'Something,' and I've regretted the decision since the moment I sat down at the computer. It's one of the most beautiful pop songs ever written, an elegant, deceptively simple ode to being blissfully under the spell of a good woman. And that's precisely the problem. Writing about 'Something' means writing about "feelings." 'Something' is a love song, you see, and writing about love is a job for songwriters and poets and 13-year-old girls, not thirty-something professional cynics.

The Beatles really seemed to enjoy writing about it: She's in love with me, she loves you and I love her, all you need is love, yadda yadda yadda. But 'Something' is different altogether. It isn't a song about love so much as it's the sound of being in love -- being deeply, serenely engulfed in another person's every movement and thought. Harrison never says "I love her" or "We're so in love." He just tosses out images and impressions that almost capture the way his woman makes him feel. Of all the innovative, catchy, and "important" love songs in the Beatles' catalog, 'Something' is the only one that truly nails what it feels like to be head over heels about someone, because it doesn't nail anything at all. The secret is right there in the title. You can't name it, you can't capture it...and you certainly can't write about it. It's just that something in the way she moves and smiles and knows, and you couldn't imagine life without it. Now that's a love song.

Crystal Castles Persevere After Fan Gets Fresh at Lollapalooza

Alice! Alice!" went up into the blustery skies above Lollapalooza's vitaminwater stage on Friday afternoon, as thousands of soaking-wet fans awaited the arrival of fiery Crystal Castles frontwoman Alice Glass. Moments later Ethan Kath, the brains behind the Castles' video game-inspired dance attack, took the stage to thunderous applause, followed by Glass, dressed in her characteristic all-black (except for her white Converse), whose arrival sent the kids into a wet, muddy frenzy. As the Toronto natives tore through cuts from their self-titled debut album, including 'Air War' and crowd favorite 'Crimewave,' Glass tested the befuddled security staff's limits, climbing around scaffolding and onto speakers, plunging into the front of the crowd, and chugging from a bottle of Tito's Vodka.

One of Glass's forays into the crowd nearly got out of hand when a "fan" grabbed the singer in a very inappropriate way. But Glass wouldn't end up the victim. The diminutive singer threw a mean punch, shaking her hand in pain after making contact with the offender. Luckily one person wasn't enough to derail the show. After taking a quick drink, Glass proclaimed, "We're going to play one more despite him," and then, pointing to the hundreds of outstretched arms in the crowd, "All those hands are going to reach boobs on their own!" Then, during a momentary break from the rain, they launched into a scorching rendition of 'Courtship Dating' that included Glass dumping her vodka directly onto the screaming fans up front.
